the hip could play a whole set of polka and it wouldn't matter cuz it's the hip, people would still go to the shows, and people would still buy the albums, trust me, they know that all the real fans out there can't wait to hear the new material, i would be really dissapointed if they didn't play at least more than half the songs off of their new albums when they tour their new albums.
Metallica did something like this for their current tour. They had a survey on the site, asking what songs fans wanted to hear played live. From the list of songs with the most number of votes, the band have worked most of these songs into their sets throughout the tour. They basically have been playing a core set of songs and working in 6-8 lesser played songs into the set.
On the first leg of their North American tour (18 dates), they played 47 different songs (a lot of which hadn't been played live in 15 to 20 years.)
This voting even got them to play Dyers Eve live, which had never been played live in its entirety since it was recorded in 1988, despite tons of fan requests (and I got to see them do it at the Winnipeg show for only the 7th time in the band's history!)
I think it would be cool if The Hip did something like this and really mixed up the setlist for the tour. However, I don't think that by sending them e-mails saying that their sets have become boring and predictable is the best way to accomplish it.
Man, I'd think that if I was in a band I'd generally play the songs I (or we) want to play, not what the hardcore 10% of our audience wants us to play.
By the way, how different is sending a "please play the songs we want to hear" email from screaming "PLAY LITTLE BONES!!!!!!" at a concert? And we all know how much we love people who do that. And we all know how much bands love that (what's the quote from Gord on the Hengalo boot? "You'll get your song if you quit screaming for it" or something to that effect).
Lastly, given the number of complaints with unresponsive emails sent already, does anyone think that any emails actually get through to anyone important?
Just my two cents, but I say you gotta leave the creative control of what gets played and when it gets played up to the band. Pandering to audience desires is why we can't escape Nickelcrap.
Its only 5 songs, its not the entire setlist...all you people who keep saying its sacrilige to email them and request 5 songs are simply trying to prove you are true fans who love everything the hip do...have a backbone, tell me you wouldn't mind hearing Blonde Solid, Montreal, Get Back Again, Highway Girl and Leave all in one night. I have been to 14 shows (not much for most fans in here) and even I am tired of the setlist regulars. Switch it up.
I saw DMB twice in Vancouver and they kept track of what they played the first time and switched it up the next time. Completely different setlist bar 3 or 4 songs. That's what I would kill for with the hip. I love every song which is why I want to hear every song and since I have heard NOIS, Courage and 100th Meridian 10 times or more each, I am ready for some new blood.

Actually, I don't need to prove to anyone that I'm a "true fan", and I'm fairly certain I have a backbone. It has to do with the simple fact that I wouldn't want amateurs telling me how to do my job. They've been doing this for two decades and they've got hundreds of shows under their belts. I think they know better than you or I.
Sure, I'd love 'em to play all of my faves that I haven't had the opportunity to hear live in person, but I'd also love to have a romantic weekend with Angelina Jolie, I'd love to drive a TT Roadster, and I'd love to be mortgage free. Unfortunately I have to deal with reality.
By the way, wasn't there a campaign during the IVL Tour to get Another Midnight played at the Oct 15 or 16/02 shows? If I recall correctly, someone actually got the petition (or vote) into Sinclair's hands before the show and he said something like "We'll consider it", but it was never played. Of course that might have been because they would have needed a lot more notice to remember how to play the song, but at least he was pleasant about it.

I like what Elvis Costello told a crowd of hooting yahoos last year who wanted to hear his old stuff from the 70s. 'By the way, we don't take requests.' F**k off, in other words. Just what I would say in his place. Think about it: WHY did Gord tell people to stop screaming for songs? Partly because he knows it ruins other people's concert experience, sure; but also because he's not in this so that he can take orders from strangers, fans or not.
i like alot of the hips slower style songs but they are show killers as far as a tempo of a show
i love sherpa, flamenco , apartment song but i am sure they won't play them live so that is why i have the cd so i can listen to it whenever the fuck i want
go to a show enjoy the astmosphe , your hip brother/ sister
just be glad they are still together . just remember we don't know how long this train will keep on a rollin so relax it is still a hip show even if they play the same setlist. damn some bands play the exact same set every god damn night of the tour (one comes to mind weezer) they were great live but they do the same thing every night so as hip fans if they play only a few songs that are staples at a hip show who cares

It would be nice if this would happen. It's just too bad that the hip don't do it on their own. I would love to hear certain songs, however regardless I always enjoy the shows. It would be nice to not hear basically the same set every time. I can't say that it would be enough for me to miss a show though. :mrgreen:

You know what guys. I love the new songs and i love the old songs. All im asking for is some or just one old song! I dont see the reason behind retiring songs that made me the loyal hipfan i am. I couldnt give 2 shits if they played newo or courgae ever again, however if they came out and played something like ...... everytime you go the crowd you freakin lose it. The hip i am sure know this... I think some of us just want some variety in the shows we pay our hard earned money for.
Well I have to say is kudos to the person(s) who started this idea and I wish them the best of luck. I think by asking for 5 songs you aren't asking the world and I think the experience would be great for every hipfan from 1st timer to the people at their 100+ show.
While some people can say the hip will do it or won't do it, the truth is they don't know anymore than you do. The only way to find out is to try and THAT is reality.

Where would any band be without their fans. Im not saying we impose on them every night, im suggesting that for 1 night they play a couple songs that they dont usually play. Songs that they have played before on past tours that help get them where they are today! The band knows that when they come to toronto 30% or greater are the same crowd that have seen them in the past.
Look at a band like pearl jam. Their sets are amazing because they will play anything!
I think this would be a good idea, worth a shot. I love so many different hip songs, the bigger the variety the better! It would definately be nice to hear some rare songs that aren't played often. :thumb:
Just enjoy the concerts! If you don't like hearing the same songs stop going and spending your hard earned money on the show! I'm just thankful I get to see the boys once every two years or so! Everyone here is a fan and has his/her own opinion and that's great! I'd still rather hear an oft played Hip setlist than pretty much any other band out there! I mean, what band doesn't play the hits? Can you go to a DMB concert without hearing "Crash into me", Pearl Jam without "Daughter"?
