Being a Hip fan does not mean liking everysong....hell I hate Tiger the Lion to no end....what it does mean though is:

1. Praying to your lord and saviour Gord Downie before going to bed

2. Wearing at least one hip item at any point during the day, preferably two during the hours 9 - 5

3. Going to, or attempting to go to every show in your province and at least one show out of your province every two years, preferably every show in Canada

4. Knowing all the words to the following songs: NOIS, ABAC, FireWorks, Nautical, Bobcaygeon and Wheat Kings. If you dont know those, you might as well crawl up and die, or at least dont come to the show and scream out random lyrics beside me....grrr.....

5. Listen to a Hip Album A day, and always buy new hip albums on the first day they come out. On top of listening to a hip album a day, you should also listen to the live album once a day as well.

6. Watch Hekekeneknknkestle ( I can't spell it) once a week, and pray (to your lord and saviour) that a "real" hip video is on its way.

7. Canvas non hip supporters, usually found outside of dance clubs at 3am....

and thats about it...oh wait...

8. Own and maintain a Hip Shrine of some sorts, with creepy news clippings and candles....
here's my take on the album: I've heard it about 25 times so the songs have completely sunken in. To get an idea of the ranking my favourite hip songs are it's a good life, impossibilium, springtime, eldorado...list goes on

im ranking them from best to worst (worst is a relative word)

goodnight josephine -- not sure why this song isnt more liked

heart of the melt
meanstreak
vaccination scar
nashville
you're everywhere
new orleans -- this song grew on me
are we family

If you were a hip fan you would appreciate all the songs for what they are, just cause it doesn't rock like the overplayed NOS, doesn't mean it's not a good song. Some of the Hip's best songs are slower ones....Flamenco.

Broaden you horizons past NOS and you might find that you will love the hip.

YAWN????

MY GOD. I never ywan at a hip tune.

thanks for the laugh. i needed it.

oh..and as for NOIS, that song could put me to sleep any day.i have hated it from the first time i heard it.

other songs i don't like:

Throwing Off Glass
A Beautiful Thing
Use It Up (i think it is "ok")
coconut creme
let's stay engaged
Wild Mountain Honey
The Bear
the rules
don't wake daddy
born in the water

i am a HUGE fan of this band. but being a fan of the band means i have the right (and the obligation, imho) to critized them. i am not a sheep. i won't force myself to like all of their material, just to call myself a "fan".

and for the record, i dislike 4 of the 13 songs. that is a lot less than half of them.
I absolutley love this album. :thumb: There is not a song that I don't like. I honestly think this is their best album since Day For Night. Maybe even since Fully Completely. Confusedhock: ...if Fully Completely is a 10/10, then IVL was a 4/10 and this new album is a 9/10. Just my opinion though.

My very favorite Hip tunes are I'll believe In You, Bring It All Back, Pigeon Camera, Nautical Diaster & Fiddler's Green... I think!

I rank the IBE songs as follows:

The Heart Of The Melt (Similar to Fire In The Hole)
You're Everywhere (has a Classic Hip sound)
Gus (Reminds me of Fight)
One Night In Copenhagen (Another Road Apples-ish tune... "Good f***in' luck, "Good f***in' luck" Tongue )
It Can't Be Nashville ("He said f*** this and f*** that" )
Vaccination Scar
Goodnight Josephine (Great song, but I don't like all the "Na..na..na.." in the middle)
As Makeshift As We Are
Heaven Is A Better Place (Punked-out REM)
Mean Streak
Summer's Killing Us
Are We Family (Similar to The Rules)
If New Orleans Is Beat (Not that catchy but the guitar reminds me a little of Unplucked Gems)

I personally think it would be tough being a fan of a band and enjoying every single song they wrote. There has to be at least one weak song in the bunch.

This is an excellent post! I couldn't have said it better myself!

You actually managed to list a few of my fav songs in there....

You see being a hip fan doesn't mean you have to like every single song...being a fan means you like the band and respect!! the music.....no one hear trash talked to the music....the song is Yawn i agree its a pretty song, but exciting it is not....

By the way I agree I've hated rules since i first heard it and it never sinks in.....but I lover Born on the Water

Oh ya By the way just so we are clear that first paragraph wasn't directed at you Mark it was directed at the "die-hard" hipster with 2 posts but Man Beautiful Thing is a gorgeous song <3 it...but you know to each his own and I agree on some and disagree but there is something everyone on this board has in common is we all love and respect the music the band makes[/quote]
The Heart Of The Melt - rocker, tempo change, great song
You're Everywhere - love the chorus, very good
Gus - good guitar interplay, great song topic, grungy feel to it, I like
One Night In Copenhagen - I also love the "Good f***in' luck, "Good f***in' luck" line, mid tempo, catchy
It Can't Be Nashville - good chorus, "and this guy's the diplomat"
Vaccination Scar - rocking tune, great driving force to the song
Goodnight Josephine - good song
As Makeshift As We Are - probably my favourite on the record; "We AAARRRE, We AAARRE", yes you are boys, yes you are
Heaven Is A Better Place - upbeat, very catchy, very good song
Mean Streak - not too fast, hear some acoustic in there and pretty good Bobby outro guitar
Summer's Killing Us - it grows on you, pretty good but not best on album
Are We Family - the Hip do slow as good as they do fast, great work
If New Orleans Is Beat - decent song

As far as slow songs go, I really like "The Rules". I think it's very underrated. Love the lyrics!

Throwing Off Glass and Beautiful Thing?? Give those another listen man. .

Three oclock in the morning, you better be dying and you were. . so we talked about time and where it went...remarkable events...

how can you ignore lyrics like that?
A Beautiful thing is hands down the best song on IVl

haaaaaaaaaands down...
then dire wolf, all tore up, throwing off glass, darkest one, silver jet, good life, dark canuck, use it up, are you ready and then that other song....

all though, I pretty much love the album except for the last three....
I think the end of dark canuck is one of the coolest parts of a hip song..

but I digress...as for IBE, you're everywhere and Gus kick major ass...
Am I the only one that loves One Night in Copenhagen? I would have to say it's my favourite song at this point.. along with Nashville and Heaven (which I've read was dedicated to Dan Snyder from the Thrashers btw, sort of makes you appreciate it even more).

To throw in my 2 cents on the songs from other albums up there, I respect your opinion, but I don't understand how people can list anything from IVL among their their least favourite songs! (Sorry I just love that album)

Actually, the only song I'd agree with listed there is Wild Mtn Honey and perhaps the Rules.
I've only heard the previews and Vaccination Scar, but One Night In Copenhagen is my favorite so far.

And Leave is my favorite on In Violet Light.
Any headphone-heads out there?

There's a sound running through Heaven Is a Better Place Today that is similar to how cymbals sound when compressed in mp3's. At first I thought it might actually be a tamborine.

Anybody else notice this? It's a bit distracting, but fortunately is only on that one song.

One listen, As Makeshift As We Are is my early favorite. :thumb:

I also don't think that either You're Everywhere or Goodnight Josephine are quite as good as those early live mp3's from ages ago suggested. Which disappoints me, because I thought GJ was going to be one of their best ever.
Powderfinger - I noticed that weird noise too, but I noticed it in the files I download from iTunes and figured that it was a compression issue. I haven't heard the CD on my headphones yet, but it appears that from what you are saying that it isn't a compresshion issue. I've read in places in that Johnny likes to drum on different media so perhaps this sound is something different than a regular cymbal that he found to drum on.....
Whomever mentioned 'Leave off IVL'...wow, so underrated, i love that song. When Gord sings 'well there's love, and there's hope', with the driving guitar force behind him, one of the most uplifting parts of any Hip song... that and dire wolf are my top two off IVL...
anyway, some notes on IBE...
1)Vaccination Scar is just reminiscent (sp??) of old hip, like the very end, couldnt sound more like the end of blow at high dough...
2) favorite song on the album is a toss up, Gus and you're everywhere..
3)everysong has grown on me with multiple listenings... that's just promising...
Don't know if it will ever reach Day For Night Status in my mind, cuz that album is just so complete and flows rediculously, but we'll see...
i'm just excited
