Okay, thought I would start an interesting (??) thread.

It's kind of neat to know a bit more about your favourite band - their likes, dislikes, pet peeves, etc. Anyone with useless knowledge about das hip, feel free to make a post.

And now, for my contribution:

Gord Downie loves peanut butter. I read an article in which one of the bandmates said they've never seen a human being ingest so much peanut butter.

I know that Johnny Fay likes collecting obsolete electronic equipment. The album cover for Phantom Power is an old device which was used to test airline equipment. He found it in an antique shop in NY.
Johhny's got a serious germ phobia... won't shake hands with anybody apparently.

Gord is Harry Sinden's godson.

And Bobby once wrestled a Gator with his bare hands, saving a family of 7 in the process.
That is awesome about Bobby. I hadn't heard about that story before. Cool beans, thanks for sharing!

Another useless fact or two on a more personal side of Gord...in addition to Gord's godfather being Harry Sinden...Gord's brother Pat works for the Boston Bruins as well.

Also, Gord has a dog, named Magnet.
kari Wrote:Also, Gord has a dog, named Magnet.

So named because Gord's first child associated a dog shaped magnet on their fridge with their actual dog. Pointing at the real K-9 and saying: "magnet."

I've also heard that Magnet is the mutt on the Henhouse album cover.

i always thought that was because his hands were sore from playing during the show.

I also heard that about Johnny, his germ-aphobia. I think that's the case, and not the soreness of his hand. Although, that would also make a valid reason.
I don't think I know anything that any other Hip fan doesn't but when I read this article I thought it was cool. It just shows what type of guy Gord is (and also explains "The Goalie Who Lives Across The Street") I don't know if it would be "useless" or not Big Grin

Gordon Downie of the Tragically Hip on "Music@Work" and Canada-size success

So how does the frontman of the biggest band in Canada spend his time when he's not at work with his music? Hockey, of course, though not the NHL variety, which he says he's soured on of late. These days he's more likely be spotted watching a women's hockey game, or playing incognito at the outdoor rink near his Toronto home. The kids there know him only as "The Goalie Who Lives Across the Street."

"I'm never seen without my mask, and I don't talk to anybody," Downie laughs. "And these kids, they come up to my thigh and they're shooting at you from all directions, asking you how much your head weighs with your helmet on. There's birds flying overhead and it's beautiful. That's hockey."

Well, he wouldn't shake anybodies hand at a video shoot, so maybe pretending to play the drums is tough on his paws too... Smile Jake Gold confirmed the germ phobia.

I shook hands with him when he got on the hotel elavator I was riding in Saint John, NB. In fact he shook hands with my wife and I, but seemed to pay more attention to my wife Big Grin .

Perhaps that is just Urban Legend.

Well, I WAS wearing pumps and a halter top...

Maybe he just doesn't like me.
I heard that the dog magnet was named that because the dog was always by their side. Hense the name magnet.

I also read somewhere that the reason Johnny doesn't shake hands is because some big guy just about crushed Johnny's hand and this is why he doesn't like shaking hands.

It's funny how we all hear different stories about the same topic.

I also heard that Gord D hates air conditioning. I guess it's something to do with his voice. I also heard that he loves blue gatorade.

I've also heard that...but also heard the other version of the name as well.

I know he doesn't like air conditioning while on tour, because his voice cracks. He made mention of this topic in the past, saying that although he's DRENCHED on stage and it could be 120 degrees in the venue itself, the warmer the better for his singing abilities. I think this holds true for many singers.
In Heksenketel, during the scene were Gord displays his chisled physique, he says something to the effect of: "I like cold weather... you can hit high notes."
