Hi Gang,

This has me a little worried:

I sent an email to the whiskey in calgary asking about taping the upcoming shows and this is the response,

"No photos or recording of any type.

The Hip are being promoted by "The house of Blues" concert promoters.

THe House of Blues does not allow it.

K"

Is there some way to circumnavigate this? I really want to tape these shows!
stealth record it
just sneak your stuff in and dont get get caught. These are bar gigs there shouldnt be a pat down when you enter the club.
They probably don't want recording devices in there because you'll be seeing the concert even before the CD is released. They don't want any leaks prior to the street date. That could be the reason why...

House of Blues was VERY strict in Orlando about not having cameras or recording devices there as well. I tried to get in, they turned me away and wanted me to 'sign in' my camera. I waited at the side of the door for a while, made myself scarce for a couple minutes, then returned to the doors and the door-woman remembered me, asked if I had checked things in okay, I said yes (white lie), and then she let me in without another padding down. I don't know what the big deal about it was anyway, because once inside, another couple DOZEN people had cameras and were taking pictures, including myself, right in front of security and they didn't care.
I've recorded in many House Of Blues venues (both the actual venue) and concerts being promoted by House Of Blues (most concerts these days are promoted by HOB). As long as the Hip's management tell the promoters what is allowed and what is not allowed then there should be no problem. The no taping thing is a cross the board rule that unless told otherwise, the promoters/venue enforce it.

Hopefully the Hip still have the same road crew. That would save a lot of headaches as well.
Taping policies are set by the band, not the venue. E-mail the Hip and ask them. I'm sure you'll be allowed to tape.
HOB in Chicago has huge signs posted everywhere (In friendly Cajun motif I might add...) that say: "NO CAMERAS, NO RECORDING EQUIPMENT: OF ANY KIND. THANK YOU."

Yet, we got both in, as did dozens of other folks. No problem at all. Just keep it on the down low, as the kids say, and you'll be fine.
