Hey Gang,

I was just wondering what the rarest hip song might be. Are there any songs that have never been played live. I know the IVL hip club songs were only played at the special concerts they did at the beginning of the IVL tour so that makes them pretty rare. I think I heard that they played fiddler's green only one time live, any truth to this? I'm listening to the ultimate rarities cd which got to start this thread.
Well Mr. Bauer, Glad you're listening to the Ultimate Rarities as I'm the one who created the compilation. As for the songs being played at the IVL premier shows; none of the hip club songs were played at either three of these shows. As for Fiddler's Green being played, it never has been played live to anyones knowledge.

Songs never played live include:
- Emergency
- The Bear
- As I Wind Down the Pines
- Born in the Water (Once Ever)
- Leave (3 times ever, 06-12-2002, 06-13-2002, 06-14-2002)

If I'm missing anything please add to my post.

The rarest Hip song is probably their cover of Rush's "Limelight", which was recorded sometime in '94 I believe. They only made one copy of it and gave it to the guys in Rush as a gift, so it's unlikely that anyone has actually heard it or ever will hear it...unless it shows up on a box set or something.
Actually, I believe I have a copy of The Bear live.
Soundecheck from Minnesota 7-9-00.
Oh yeah.
What about Oh Honey?
Or Black Day in July?
Or maybe even Silver Road?
Do those count?
Only Oh Honey is a Hip song out of those three....and you're right, it hasn't been performed live.

The rarest song is probably the ultra-slow studio version of Times Are Passing Us By. Everybody's heard the Horseshoe version, but the slow, lilting Times was a song I was not even aware of for years. I just got a copy and I can 't stop listening to it....it's been a few months and I still think it's one of the most beautiful songs the Hip have ever done. And it's even studio quality! What luck!
i`m sure i have heard emergency live and i think it was with sarah mclachlan if i recall...anyone heard of it?
The fast verson of So Hard Done By was played only a handful of times. Blonde Solid has been played live once.

I had about 50 seconds of the studio verson of Times once a couple of years ago, but never the full deal. Do you have an mp3 of it? What about Ouch or Get Back Again, songs from that demo that the studio versons never surfaced on the net.

Fiddler's Green has never been played.

Hip concert announcement Monday to announce the July 1 Ampitheatre show. And you know, with the release and NXNE around the corner, there's bound to be more to come.

Cheers

That was not a live version. it was done in a studio. I remember hearing it on the edge 102.1 during the OGHONM. Alan Cross said was at the same studio while the Hip were working on Day for Night and she joined them for a recording of it.
Yeah I have the CBC version, the Misty Moon version, and an Ontario Place version kicking around (probably my fav -- GD dedicates it to about 12 different people). I would love to hear the studio treatment. It just may cause it to unseat "If You Lived Here" as the favourite live song.

Cheers

Rarist Hip song is "Wait So Long", played 1 time at BarryMores 88 and never again, according to What Gord says its the first song he and Paul wrote.
Theres another tune on that Bootleg Called "Scratchin At My Window" Gord intros the song as a mysterious song you can trade with your girl, and finally the slow version of "Times Are Passing Us By" is also on this bootleg, as far as I know its the only time its played slow, the other copy of Times Are Passing us by,mentioned above is cut at 1:05 and is from the road apples Demos. I found a full copy after 3 years of pain staking efforts and its well worth the wait.
