For me, one of the great things about this band is the metaphor, poetry and imagination in the lyrics. It's always hard to pinpoint exactly what a song is about or what it has been inspired by. Granted this was easier in the early days, but the band has matured and developed so much over the years that I'm sure we all have our own interpretations of our favourite Hip tunes...
So, what do you get out of Vaccination Scar?
I haven't really sat down and examined the lyrics yet, but so far, I'm getting a "decision" or "reconcilliation" vibe. Somebody is tenuosly hanging on to a lie or a tale and is deciding whether to let it go and come clean or keep on living the lie, maintaining the mystery... the Tacoma Narrows Bridge (Barely holding together) and the "I'll tell ya like it is..." have helped shape that point of view. To be honest, I think "Bush Administration" sometimes...
Anyway, that's what I'm getting now, might be different in two weeks.

I was thinking that too... the "we're rolling, so what?" line seems to be somebody responding to the "Let's roll" Bush rhetoric post 9/11.
Plus, if you pay attention to Gord's rants and his MM appearance during the solo tour, plus the anti-Bush sentiment of Edgefest in general (OLP in particular) the Bush-9/11 stuff was certainly on the mind during the writing of this album...

IVL in my opinion is highly under rated, I love it. That said I'm pumped about the sound of Vaccination Scar.
Haven't had a chance to go over the lyrics too seriously yet myself. I find that it usually takes me some time to wrap my head around the lyrics as a whole. I am liking this song more and more each time I listen to it though which is a typical of a great hip tune for me.

Totally agree with that and as an example here's a different take on the lyrics:
"the sky looks threatened
heading home in the dust"
I think of a warm summer evening, driving home from work building grain bins on a gravel farm road, into an ominous(sp?) looking thunderstorm. I can smell it as well but there's no scratch and sniff emoticon to aid in that department. :wink: Granted, Gord has probably never worked as a bin builder on the praries, but you could probably substitute any number of other jobs or activites to drive home from.
I could see how one could read a terrorist theme into it, but the above is the image that I first got with it.

To me, it's Iraq related. Just some thoughts, or thoughts that the lyrics provoke for me . This strikes me with the most force of all the lyrics. But it's all about perception , I like your take on it Royce, very peacefull, living on the prairies I can see it too .

Yeah, that chemistry line has grabbed me too. Thinking of Powell at the UN with his vial of chemical weapons, or a "the die is cast" and there's nothing we can do now kinda thing...
