I am not a huge metallica fan, but I really like the set up of the live download site they have.
I really hope the hip do something like this.

We could only be so lucky!!
That is a great system.
No doubt, that is a great set-up. If TTH doesn't do something like this you really gotta wonder. but i got faith that like larz said its the next logical step.......
They would make a ton of cash, I know they would.
Yup, It's a Win-Win Situation, but you know the Hip's stand, they do things as a collective or it's 2 pointz, the cash flowing in would be bonus, but they look at the big picture. I just don't see the problem with doing this myself.......anyone else think of some reason why they wouldn't?
It's a great idea, not only does it give the fans something they would really cherish, but it's also a means of making them independent of the music label biz, if its planned right. If they advertised at the shows, i would say 50-60 percent of the people there would order one, its reasonably cheap, almost no cost involved except for the bandwidth. I'm not a big fan of Metallica myself; I think its ironic that Metallica of all people is doing this, what with their reaction against Napster and downloading.
Gord D tried it and, from where i sit, it was only midely successful. there were quite a few shows that had problems, weren't there?
i do like the fact that metallica is offering FLAC, tho. that is sooooooo much better than shitty mp3's.
i would probably buy the hip ones simply because there is not a large and active taping community. dmb is also going to offer it nd i can't see me buying any of them. i would take a nice full audience recording over a soundboard any day.

I dunno about that, soundboard tends to filter out the woo wooing and cheering that comes out on a majority of audience recordings. You can still hear it, but it sounds more like a concert recording to me.

Matrix - that's the answer to our problems. Take the high quality soundboard recording, and mix it with an audience recording, adjusting the levels of each so that you get the best of both worlds. If you are not familiar with this, check out some of the great shows available on archive.org. My personal favourite matrixed show is this one http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-deta ... hp?id=1746 by Howie Day.
We could only be so lucky to have the Hip decide to do this. I think that this would fly really well. It would be especially nice to have high-quality bootlegs. It would be so cool 8) .
Boys, if you see this thread, please consider this!

you are right, a sbd does take out a lot of that noise. if the band is releasing these shows 48-72 hours after the show, i don't imagine there is a whole lot of mixing going on. in that case, i doubt you would hear any of the crowd. like i said, i would take a balanced audience recording over a soundboard.
a matrix is an ideal solution, but we can't always get that. Chris, i grabbed that Howie Day show last night. i will listen to it tonite. i know of him, but have never heard his music.
If soundboard recordings are available, and the band continues to be taper friendly, perhaps even adding a "taper section" next to the soundboard, as many taper-friendly bands do, we should be able to get a good number of great matrixed shows from the upcoming tour. But it does require a bit of work....
In regards to Howie Day, I'm totally hooked. Let me know what you think of that show.
very cool, and the Hip are the perfect band to do something like that. I think radiohead have a similar approach. but it takes mucho $.
