Highway Girl is a great bar band song, and the Double Suicide live version is just EPIC.......but putting it up against any of these other songs is just not a fair fight.Its like putting a 100lb guy in the ring with Mike Tyson.
I read over the list and nothing popped out as an obvious first choice...until I read your comment, cochise. Bang on. Highway Girl can hit the road.

It's hard to believe the bookends for this poll, 'Highway Girl' and 'Possessed', are from the same band. A pure gut rocker vs. a cerebral song embedded with quotes from a Canadian literary theorist and a French philosopher. Quite an evolution. The songs also show a change in Downie's thoughts on love. In 'Highway' the passion of youthful love burns hot and fast while in 'Possessed' the cold passion of support and reassurance for a partner in difficult times represents love at a lower temperature (as Bono once referred to it). A younger me would have related more to Highway Girl. Now I see it as a bit adolescent, making it the easiest vote for me in a while. Hands down it's Highway Girl.

i've been in the same boat. like it a lot...... sing along with my voice shot afterwards. but never love loved it.

My Music at Work did nothing for me when I first heard it on the M@W leak; listened to the studio version many times from then until that tour and it never really grew on me.
However, when I first heard it live, something clicked and while it is not my favourite studio track, I love the live version.

My Music at Work is a great track, one of the few on M@W that is an ear worm. I love the fact that the track has a big anthemic feel to it while conversely the lyrics express self doubt as a song writer. With a few tweaks, given the nature of the lyrics, it would probably would have also worked with a more sombre acoustic treatment.
'My Music at Work' feels like a companion piece to 'Bring it All Back'. When "Everything is bleak It's the middle of the night" is a time when you don't want to "hear your heart beat". Silence is the sound of failure for a song writer. The filth of a "sink full of Ganges" is where you remain when "carving the ivory" of the piano keys isn't leading anywhere and you can't pull the song out of the "spider-web alphabets" of the musical staff. In Bring it All Back Gord does eventually get a song but still conveys some doubt ("Can you bring it all back to me?) while My M@W is a little darker in that there doesn't appear to be a happy resolution to the song writing struggles.
Someone voted for Hundredth Meridian over Highway Girl?
I can see The Last Recluse and The Drop Off getting some votes away from Highway Girl for people that are thinking Double Suicide monologue version of Highway Girl is awesome! But go back and listen to the EP. Sounds like a tin can.
Unless there’s a poll pitting Coconut Cream or Are You Ready? (... and are you ready? Ready, are you ready to love? And are you ready? Ready, are you ready to love? To love. To love ... yeah. <<— actual lyrics) against maybe Small Town Bringdown, then everybody else should be pitching a shutout against the EP track every time.
In fact, I’d go so far as to say there should be a negative option billing for the first round. And if you deselect the EP track you have to fill out a waiver or something.
