I love the lyrics and the video for Good Life but the song itself I don't find can stand against these other songs, which are pillars of the Hip catalogue.

Me too; don't understand how 38 Years lasted this long. Kids is a far better tune in every single way imaginable. Heard 38 Years when they opened the arena in Kingston, never need to hear it again. Would always be excited to hear Kids live, it's a great tune. Anyways, it looks like 38 will finally bow out this round.

I don't really get you guys' objections to the rhymes in 38...is it just because they're one syllable or is it because the words are simple? Is there really a style guide for rhyming? And what is the justification for it?

I suppose one could take issue with the simplicity of it. However, it doesn't sink to the depths of the nursery rhyme lines of "Impossibilium": "We lift the rocket out of the Pocket nothing can stop it"

You missed my earlier riff on Gord rhyming random names into that stanza. I find it to be such a weak line in the song, reminiscent of the most odious line in rock and roll history courtesy of Tom Petty -- "He got an agent and a roadie named Bart".

That line is just too on-the-nose for me, made even worse by the fact that Night and Mike don't even rhyme, really. It also overly personalizes the song, which is at odds with Gord later repudiating it as "autobiography" (because it wasn't). It is also a really lazy rhyme and used so unabashedly and without irony that it makes it crystal clear to me that this is a young band, a young lyricist who are destined to get so much better, and it hurst my ears when I hear it (like all of the EP).
I love the song, I love the music, but that line goes off like a gong every time.

Now imagine being a kid from Kingston named Mike. The number of "even GORD knows you're going to be 38 years old and you won't have kissed a girl" jokes I endured...
I've never had an issue with the "older brother Mike" lyric. 38 Years Old is the work of a young band still trying to develop their sound, and Gord had yet to come into his own as a lyric writer/poet. It's not W.B. Yeats or anything, but it works just fine for the song and the narrative.
