I really am having a hard time dealing with Pines going in the first round ... that said, it gave me a chance to vote for both WMH (first round) and Train Overnight (second round), which loads my variables.

Train Overnight has an OK sound, but it's a cardinal example of what's wrong with Gord D on this album: a series of laborious abstractions substituting as songwriting.

Still, I voted 'The Bastard,' on the grounds that 'Train' gets by if you don't pay much attention, whereas that song positively grates on my ears.

Voting Bastard. I don't mind it, I think its a decent song. I went with Train because I remember during the M@W release promo period, someone noted that "Train" has a "Zeppelin-esque" sound to it, which I think is true. The band accepted that as a compliment. I think a lot has to do with Paul's use of a Les Paul (no pun) guitar and Johnny's drumming on this song which I think are fantastic (as is his work on the Bear and Completeists).

I hear Zeppelin in Wild Mountain Honey way more than Train. But speaking of The Bastard, I seem to remember Johnny Fay making a joke at the time they wanted to call the song, and he takes on a French accent, "English bastard!" And shout out to Mr. Hussein on the tabla - whoever he may be. I give that song credit for introducing a new instrument into the Hip sound.

Also voted the Bastard. It's just not a very interesting song. The tabla is cool, and Gord puts in a great vocal performance, but that's about it.

This is actually why I consider it middle of the pack on M@W. I voted Train Overnight.

I actually kinda dig Train Overnight musically. I've always liked the main guitar riff (courtesy of Paul I'm assuming), the cool rhythm, and especially Johnny's drumming. All that being said though, it's definitely next on my chopping block, as it's just not as strong as any of the remaining tracks.

I agree.
However, I def rank it above The Completists. I think that means that's next up for me.

I'm in the massive minority on this, but I love Train Overnight. It's easily in my top 15 Hip songs of all time. I love everything about it, the sound of the drums, the groove, the way Gord's voice sounds, the guitar riff, the abstract lyrics and how they all fit together. I loved it the first time I heard it and my adoration has never waned.

Lake Fever still edges it out for favourite song on the album though.
