"And turn breezes in rivulets" from Flamenco is a fantastic line that I like to occasionally use when I'm telling someone not to sweat the small stuff.

Hey, don't get me wrong, ranking it number 5 on the album does not diminish my super capacity to love it.

But all right, if it survives this time and takes out DWD or Springtime or both, I will just get the chance to vote against it again, this time in vengeful spiteful rage (my natural tendency to hate).

I never saw the magic that Gord saw in 'Springtime.' A solid song, not a great one; neither the lyric nor the melody are especislly great.

I think it's the bass line that resonnates...figuratively and literally. I've heard Gord D say that they loved playing it because of the response it got from the audience. I love it, especially live, and I think it does all come down Gord S's funky/groovy bass line that frames the song. I always loved hearing it live especially on the heals of some loud blistering rocker. When it's hot in the mix, you can literally feel that calm soothing bass reverberating through your body...and it just feels so good. Springtime may get a vote from me in the next round...but not this one.

I'd rank these survivors from best to worst as follows:

ABAC
Gift Shop
Flamenco
Springtime
DWD

But I would have Put It Off and 700-ft right after ABAC on that list.

That's interesting... I've never detected any kind of up tick in audience response with Springtime. I wouldn't call it a "fan favourite" per se. If part of Gord's reasoning for it being his favourite song is crowd response (and to be fair he's never publicly linked the two) than I'd find that odd.

Springtime is such a powerful song live. Just pure power sometimes.
I remember vividly the 4th night of the Artpark run several years ago (6-6-9)when it really felt as if the roof was going to blow off of the venue. The crowd was just going nuts.
When this song is clickin' it is unstoppable.
It's that slow-burn build that just explodes before you know it.

I love it live as well, but if it was to follow any of the Hip's other barn burners, say Grace, Too like on LBU, I don't think I'd notice a change in the crowd. It plays really well in a set and gets a good reception but in my recollection it doesn't get any better crowd response than any of 20-30 other songs, at least nothing unique that I've noted. The last time I saw it live was in Toronto #2 on the MMP tour, where it followed Flamenco. I recall Flamenco getting a better response. But my memory is certainly fallible.
