This news was an absolute gut punch when I heard it on the radio this morning. Superunknown was a monster album and lived in my CD player in '94. "The Day I Tried to Live", "Head Down", "4th of July", "Fell on Black Days"... so many great tunes on that one. Staley, Cobain, Weiland, and Cornell all gone... Eddie is the one of the few remaining from everything that was good and mainstream coming out of America in the early to mid 90's.
one of the best voices ever. even at 52, his singing voice was on point.
At the risk of sounding overdramatic, this is one of the worst days of my entire life.
Yeah, this was awful to wake up to. I had a few friends at the Detroit show last night and one of them posted a few videos of the show before the news broke. Chris seems super out of it. Really "empty" and exhausted I guess. It was just really sad to watch, after already knowing the news. He was definitely nothing like the intense dude he normally is on stage.
The last song they played was Slaves and Bulldozers, merged with "In My Time of Dying" .....
Sadly after hearing that and seeing his performance, I think the initial reports on cause of death may be true. I still hope it's not.

Horrible news. Such a great singer/songwriter/performer. Soundgarden and Temple of the Dog were both constant mainstays for me throughout the 90s. Soundgarden's 2012 comeback album King Animal was fantastic, and word is they were slowly working on a new one. I also enjoyed some of the Audioslave stuff, and I loved his solo acoustic material. Dude was an immense talent that will be greatly missed.
The Seattle Space Needle went black tonight in honor of Cornell.
I know Nirvana is considered THE grunge band and given all the accolades for the scene and the impact they had on music, pretty much equivalent to the Beatles to rock. But personally I never had the connection to Nirvana like others did/do. Not a knock against them, just my own personal taste.
But Soundgarden and Stone Temple Pilots...they were my Nirvana. To have lost both now just completely sucks.
Hard to believe the losses we have had. Eddie is the last man standing of the grunge scene.

Yup, its where I got my user name. I was going through a rough break up when that song came out. The lyrics, or at least the way I perceived the lyrics, really hit close to home for me. When I was signing up here, it just popped into my head to use.
Never did get to see Soundgarden, but did see Audioslave on that tour at RPM's in Toronto. Was an amazing show, the boys even gave a nod to Rush's hometown by doing a killer version of Working Man.
Damn this sucks.

I've listened to this Sweden show many times over the past seven or eight years and it is a great example (maybe the best?) of Cornell's talent. If anyone hasn't seen the "One" mash-up he did by singing Metallica's lyrics with U2's music, it's worth checking out as well:
