I know the Hip will always be "Canada's band," but they were everything to us. Since 1989 they have informed our tastes, our musical discussions, provided nights upon nights of listening sessions, and brought us together in physical, emotional, and aesthetic manners that simply wouldn't have been possible without them. Being American Hip fans is a very tribal, lonely business. I will never understand why they didn't take off down here, but I'm goddamned happy I got to see them in so many small clubs. Seeing Gord work out the lyrics to "Poets" during the 100th Meridian interlude at Bogart's in Cincinnati is something I'll never forget.

My wife went to that show. August 1996 I think. I couldn't go because of work. She met the band afterward and got pictures with them. I've looked around for a recording of that show but no luck.
