oscar nominations

I was pleased that LOTR received 11 nominations, but none for best actor? I understand that it is an ensamble cast, but still... Cry

Johnny Depp gets my vote for best actor. The other day in my scene study class we were talking about actors who defy expectations in their craft. I think Mr. Depp is an excellent example. It would have been so easy to play the part as the typical pirate, eye patch, all very scary and, well dull. However he turned the part into his own. Bravo.

As for best actress...I'm at a loss.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for Peter Jackson(to win director) and LOTR for best picture....as far as the others..I am neutral

We are going to an Oscar Party...and the food is always themed according to what movies are nominated. I am bringing 'Lembas bread' .. or my version of it 8) (wrapped in some sort of leaf...maybe banana leaves) ...should be interesting :thumb:
there is no way elijah wood or sean astin should be nominated (i know thier not but i'm just saying)for LOTR. I thought their acting was OK but the oscars generally dont like sci-fi fantasy films so maybe its unfair to them. I hope that Bill Murray wins for his role in Lost in translation. He deserves it, after all look at his prevous "funny" roles that were great but got left unnoticed. Hes given so much to movies but recieved no respect yet!

Best picture HAS to be LOTR- hands down.
I agree that Bill Murray deserves it. I'm pulling for him as well.

As for Depp, he is a great overall actor and deserving of it as well, I just favor Murray cause he gets no respect. Apparently Depp modled his character in PotC after Keith Richards. After hearing about that it seems so obvious to me, but I see a little Hunter S. Tompson in there too.

I think it is irrelavent that Depp shaped parts of his character after Keith Richards. I mean, honestly, how many people look at Richards and think, "I know! He looks like a pirate!!". I don't me to attack, I just think that what Depp did deserves credit...However, I would be happy to see Murray walk away with the Oscar. I loved the film and he *does* deserve recognition for an exceptional role.

Sorry if you misunderstood me. I agree that it's irrelavent, I just think it's interesting. Not trying to take anything away from Depp, I think he's brilliant and one of the best actors out there. Merly an interesting point about that specific character.
i think its interesting that Johnny Depp is the favorite for the best actor award;before taking this role, he was pretty much dismissed and written off by the Hollywood studio powers that be as too controversial( for his brushes with the law and his outspokeness about Bush) and unable to bring audiences in to see his movies(because he preferred doing art house flicks)Now, after making the studio a ton of money for POTC, he's being hailed by the Hollywood set as a strong actor and a genius. to me, that's nothing but hypocrisy. He's a great actor who finally gets the attention he deserves. To be honest, I wont be watching the Oscars cause it's almost 4 hours of long acceptance speeches and air kisses. The only thing that makes it almost worth watching is Billy Crystal.
Wait, wait. Has anyone seen Mystic River? Not only was the film great, Sean Penn was OUTSTANDING. I don't recall one person in the theatre with jaws wide open after his one "show-stealing" scene, to with-hold on any spoilers. Anyways, folks, just wanted to throw that in, still haven't seen Pirates or Lost In Translation, but I'm sure Depp and Murray wouldn't compare to Penn...

I haven't seen any of these movies yet. But I LOVE Sean Penn. I really thought he should have won for I am Sam. I have heard really good things to about Bill Murray's performance. Are these movies released yet on video/DVD? I know POTC is but well that movie is not for me. Anyone else here just dying to see monster?
Lost in Translation (aka. the Bill Murray movie) comes out on DVD next Tuesday (Feb 3)...not sure about the others...

I had forgotten about Penn's performance  Amazing. Just amazing. The emotional range he has is nothing short of incrediable. Is it too late to change my vote?

Yes I agree (we finally agree on something Confusedhock: :winkSmile.
I couldn't care less about the Oscars..when Julia Roberts received one for Erin Brockovich in 2000... ...come on.
All that aside, I saw PotC, liked that one and Mystic River, looooved that one. Sean Penn did an amazing job.
Wouldnt mind if Marcia Gay Harden got an oscar either, she was pretty damn good too.

I know! Who would have thought??
Potc was cool, not only thanks to Depp, I thought Geoffrey Rush did a good job too.

And well as for Spanish, no sé que decirte, es cuestión de practicar
