Do I ever. I knew her from the Counting Crows newsgroup before she ever followed the Hip...she used to do the exact same thing with Adam Duritz. I remember her first post on the hip group and me thinking, "oh, oh". Hope she's ok, wherever she is.
oh my. Totally forgot about her.
I was fifteen when
TATHH came out, and I hated it the first time I listened to it.
Also: I'm sure it's been discussed before, but in terms of the Hip + Gord/REM + Mike Stipe parallels, does it get much more blatant than
TATHH vs "Distrubance at the Heron House"?

It just occurred to me that Henhouse is exactly 20 years old this year. I was 21 when it came out. There was a store called Music Baron near my place that was having a midnight sale, and my girlfriend and I lined up to buy the album. There were a couple hundred people there easily, and I remember the lineup stretched around the block and down the street. I loved the album right off the bat. The opening one-two punch of Gift Shop/Springtime was the greatest thing I'd ever heard from the Hip up to that point, and really, the first 5 songs on that record are about as flawless as you can get.
I was 18. It's funny that we've randomly discussed our ages relative to TATH. But, like dirework74, I remember my instant love for that album. To this day, I can't hear the opening notes to Gift Shop without getting tingles up my spine. I remember thinking how beautiful that one, Flamenco and Let's Stay Engaged were - maybe the most beautiful tunes the Hip have ever written outside of Emperor Penguin. And how weird Butts Wigglin and Coconut Cream were. Gord and the boys were in such a creative zone back then, in the studio and on stage. I love Phantom Power, but it took some extra time to grow on me. I find that's been my experience with every Hip disc since.
Gift Shop was one of those tunes that had worked its way into set lists and jams before the album. I was so glad to finally hear it on a proper release.

I actually spoke to her on the phone once.
Kind of like if you could hear a Dali painting...
Cheers to the old timers!

this writing actually hurts' cause see i can not listen to the new tragically hip record without freaking out i
n this massive sadness but the songs are ... the best ever ... "what blue" "in the dark" - every song actually. and that's a first
and i start too feel um young again
and then remember
that gordon downie got fucking brain cancer
and that's another 'first' - it is so ... unfair for his kin and kind
the ones still trying and so i tip my hat to all of them.
damn
but i can't be mad as that would imply that the world's justice
operates outside of god's will and that's impossible
and just another reason to attack. mostly myself
by slapping the fat on my back ...
i am going to make each word count
'cause no one's got the kind of time
my words have always required -
i was reading old posts and "cringe" doesn't quite cover it
as i bare witness to my failure to convince myself
of own bullshit.
and on sunday when i first heard the album
i remember how i got to be so alone.
after the shows, well constantly, actually,
i wanted to be alone so i could put on the tunes,
smoke a bowl and talk and no one could shut me up!
sadly
for the first time out here, i will do my best to eliminate
the superflous.
For the first time, i have to accept that i will never see him again
and BOY THAT GOTS A STING TO IT, EH?
maybe the problem is too many firsts ...
man machine poem - "great soul" just started
and thing is and i pulled out the stereo for the first time
since i moved here.
another first - i'm killin' myself
but you should listen to the record starting with the last song first
with headphones ... look. i was always glad i never learned how to play music
so would never comment on clever progressions and turbulence
but when you hear him sing - how he drops the words on the music,
poetry can never compare to music but enough.
there is no way i can go to one of the tragically hip concerts.
can you imagine what stub hub wants for a ticket
and my passport is long expired and i have no car -
actually i do have a 2012 vw jetta i haven't pain on in two years!
no kidding. so - he's crashed it DOZENS of times during heroin/zanny nights.
leo ... his best friend OD'd and died in his mother's arms ...
lo OD's a month later but his girlfriend called me and i had her call 911
and the next day he moved back in here.
so i weaned him off the shit and in two weeks all was well
and he had a new job and was back with his girl and he's okay
but somehow we accidentally got addicted to heroin - i'm not kidding.
i don't touch the stuff anymore but did have a crack problem there
around the holidays and lolo ended up in a squad car and a psych ward
several times. no jail for leo. and if you had any idea ... it's a miracle.
but now she has a job at the local country club and we be in fancy land.
sewickly - where mario lameaux and sid crosby live. chuck noll.
imagine seeing them at the giant eagle. but you never will ...
okay that's it about me except i can't write about "ocean, next" without ...
i always kept this - well. i always imagined that someday me and gordie
would be able to have it out, you know?
side note - my job - got promoted and make more money than i ever imagined
even though the kids ... thousands and thousands lost. and i pay 700 bucks
after a taxes for guess what? STUDENT LOANS AGH. wow i gotta be close
paying them off ... got my first one in 1979. DANG.
i'm babysitting my mom's little red dog and the drums on "machine" came on
and now the dog is barking at the tunes! oh loyal protector!
i now believe the opposite of everything i ever believe - actually i don't believe in anything.
fed on shadows, baby
this might be it for me and gordie - every irrelevance was the first hint
back when jolene still liked me - and i miss her and madge - you can't imagine
especially now as i have no one to dig these tunes with
but as i was saying i liked it alone
or with my tune mate, madge.
and i never had another tune mate. that never happened again.
but another first - i don't have anything to do in my new job.
my boss knows it - basically four times a year i do a bunch
of easy, repetive tasks. go to about 6 meetings a month
and i work from home so i can work in the yard and write -
even though i generally just watch tv.
