I like it, but I don't see the crowd singing along to it at a concert. I'm also a bit disappointed to not hear some standouts from Paul or Rob, but i'll give it a few more listens - maybe i'm missing it.
It sounds like the long overdue love child of Escape Is At Hand and Dakota by Stereophonics. It won't be the Top 40 hit that the latter was, but it'll be a wonderful addition to the live set like the former.
I'm hoping this is more of an 'in view' (which I hated, but loved the album) than an 'at transformation' (which I loved, but hated the album) case...pretty underwhelmed on the first few listens. It's...fine, but *this* is the lead single?
I quite like the song. It *does* echo the Music@work template, especially in the first couple of notes ('everything is bleak'). But it takes it in a much moodier, mid-tempo direction. The lyrics seem great to me - I haven't studied them, but they seem to go almost metaphysical ('God rustling in the bushes...but it was you'), quite a turn for Gord. Most importantly, the song is not trying to sound like 'classic Hip,' which is a trap they've tended to fall into with lead singles. Indeed, the argument that 'I can't see the crowd singing along to this in concert' is a complete non-argument to me. These guys are not AC-DC. Let them evolve.

Good, strong song, promising what I hope is a good, strong, mature album (which is what NFPA was, IMHO).
Only one thing I am disappointed with is having to wait until June for all of it!

Awesome first song...love it!
Definitely a single for Hip fans, not a single for the radio I would say.

This song is a tearjerker (which I suspect most of the album will be).
And now we wait for it to leak like a Panamanian law firm!
I was totally expecting the first single to be an upbeat rocker, as the first singles from the past few albums have been, but still happy with this one!
Interesting — there's all sort of nods (musically and lyrically) to the Hip's catalogue in this song. Interesting, too, that the title of this album resurfaces past song titles and lyrics. The more I listen, the more deliberate it seems to be.
I really dig the song.

Though, I've listened to it about six times now and it's making me increasingly sad.

Listened to it a couple times driving into work this morning and have to say I wasn't really catching on me. But then half way through the morning I caught myself humming it. Listened to it again (and watched the video) at lunch and its growing on me, really starting to like it.

By the way, I wonder if that fish is named Mike? See who gets that reference, LOL
The Heron Outside Wrote:Interesting track. I hear a lot of BSS, especially in the build. Kevin Drew's fingerprints all over this one.

A very heavy personal element too. Downie's rumoured divorce seems to be the key theme here, especially in the video.

Overall, I dig the moody element and the build is great. I was waiting for the song to explode in a classic, crunchy, snarling "Hip" kinda way, but they seem to have held back. Nevertheless, interested to see where this album goes.

I picked up on that too. The actor really resembles a young Gord as well with the hair and beard. Not sure if that was intentional.

Just played on Moncton's station for the first time couple mins ago. Once the tune was over the DJ said it was his first time hearing it and he seemed to share a similar view as a lot of us here. Said at first wasnt sure at fist then maybe grew on him a bit more towards the end he was tapping his foot but will have to digest that a bit more haha
The song makes me feel optimistic and melancholy at the same time. I can't get enough of it, feels very heartfelt. Going to try and figure out some of the guitar parts tonight.
