Honestly, how many bands have been continuously creative and performing a great, innovative live show as they approach their 50's? Can't think of too many. The Stones haven't been creative since the 70's, for instance.
I agree with you about the mic stand and the hankies. It was funny at first, but after so many years, it's time to put it to rest.
The Hip have had more years of continued excellence than most bands. Maybe their time is just up. Maybe they'll have a re-birth of sorts in the coming years. We'll find out in the years to come. If they don't have it in the tank for another great album or two or three, it was an awesome run.
I disagree
this is what makes a band from good to great
this time of their career
Obviously gord is not in his 20's anymore and not able to go crazy
Obviously they do not have the same hunger they once had
however the fact that this board has jumped the sharks on the time says how low they have sunk
Look at bands like phish right now
that has cut back their playing time however are still giving fans a taste of their greatness
The fustration with the hip, is they really seem to have stopped caring
and are satisfied with a crappy performance
Gord needs to loose the hate, the geigh hankie, the glasses, grow some hair and put some weight on!
he is starting to look like the canadian version of michael stipe
he looks like he is ill !
someone, needs to kick his ass, and get him motivated again
I hate to say it , but gord is the hip and current gord sucks
i wish 80's / 90's gord could come back and kick current skinny gords ass

You do realize that Gord is pushing 50, right? The man looks his age, and there's nothing he can do about that. Also, he's always been a skinny dude, so I'm not sure if it's even possible for him to gain weight. He must have a really high metabolism.
I do agree that he needs to put the hankie/mic-stand-thinks-he's-a-man stuff to rest. That schtick has more than run it's course, and it's not even entertaining anymore. But really, I just want him to start singing in key again. If he does that, I'll be happy.

80 90 gord would kick your ass to
For being such a puffter
I agree with Direwolf that Gord's singing is a bit of a problem right now. Recovering from the damage incurred by constant touring is possible. Ian Anderson, the singer for Jethro Tull, had a lot of problems with his voice at one point, and was able to recover much of his range through hard work and study. It's partly about learning to sing a little differently, and a little more softly. So I do hold out hope that Gord can learn to make his voice work on future recordings. But there's no denying that he sounds a little rough on some of the tracks from the latest record, and we all know that he has had his issues during live shows.
I also agree with Kennedy11 that the shows have been a lot duller since Gord has started to play acoustic. I really think that his contributions in terms of guitar work are unnecessary. He's not really a great guitarist, and it's hard to hear what he's doing over the other players anyway. One of the most appealing things about the Hip's show for years was Gord's particular, odd way of flailing around on stage. When he plays guitar, that goes out the window.
I think I can speak for a lot of fans when I say that I'm really tired of hearing Poets live. It's an old song, and the Hip have enough new good ones to make a setlist. They don't need to use their hits as a crutch. Whatever they do in the future, I hope it involves playing more deep tracks live!

Have you heard the clips from the solo/acoustic show he did a week ago? His singing sounds amazing. Cleary there's nothing wrong with his voice. It's only with the Hip where he completely goes off the rails, and it's becoming more obvious to me that he's doing this on purpose. My guess is he's completely bored with those songs. As I said in another thread (or maybe it was this one): if the band is bored playing those songs, then whey the f--- do they continue to play them every single night?? These guys have an endless well of material they can draw from to keep the shows fun and interesting for themselves, but instead they just keep playing the same damn setlist over and over again. It's baffling.

yup... saw for myself at the Buffao show and was extemely confused ( elated how good he sounded , but confused why he screams at Hip gigs)
Only he knows for sure.
I can say that he looked
very comfortable with the solo gig , the room and the subject matter
Is this his new wheelhouse....time will tell
