oops, i meant the labels will abandon, not the bands will abandon the bands...not enough coffee, too much turkey :lol: How you remind me is an ok song, but what really gets my goat is Too Bad(correct title? the song about domestic abuse) andthe new one where the opening line is i like your pants around your ankles, or something. It's trite, blowhard music that pretends to "care" about a serious issue like domestic abuse.
Funny, but I had a discussion on that exact topic the other day, but in relation to the interpretation of the Watchmen's "Run and Hide"...
To the casual listener, the opening lyrics "I hate to see you lying there, curled up in a ball; I hate to smash your pretty face against the f&%*ing wall" could easily be misconstrued. However, people might recall that at the end of the video for that, they give a phone number to which you can report domestic abuse...
The other example that comes to my mind is Soul Asylum (say what you will about the band) and their vid for "Runaway Train" which gave a number for the local children's help line at the conclusion...
In my mind, there is a clear dividing line between writing a song to help, and writing a song to exploit (as in, for profit)...The two above examples sit firmly in the former category (R+H wasn't a huge commercial hit, so it's not really in the same boat), while to me anyway, NB seems to be in the latter...
I don't recall if there was any sort of similar "contact" info presented at the end of the vid "Too Late" or not, but I do know people who claim to love that song, yet have absolutely no idea what it's about (take that for what you will)...
BTW, I may be getting old, but the new NB tune seems to me to be long on the shock (ie. the pants line), and very short on the rock...a sure sign a band's 15 minutes of fame is just about up...

In all fairness, I get the impression with nickelback that they try a little harder than most of the moaning post-grunge crowd, but that still makes them just the best of a bad bunch. They're one of any number of soundalikes, and one tires of hearing the same thing constantly on commercial radio (never listen to it if I can help it). Also, I feel that a lot of the real feeling has been drained of the music in the years since Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and arguably Alice in Chains started writing this stuff. All of these bands came from a background of heavy drug abuse, and Eddie Vedder in particular had a harsh childhood. That's where a lot of the material came from. Their immitators just ripped of the sound, they can't duplicate the real emotion behind, say, the Temple of The Dog record.

Off-topic here, but sadly I did not find this to be the case with the Trews, a band whose CDs I enjoy in smallish doses. I've seen them live twice, and the second time was so much like the first that I spent much of the set plotting a story I intended to write and hoping they's bring the opener (Will Hoge, who is AWESOME!!!) back for the encore.
They did, which saved my night.

It's all subjective. To the masses that are lapping up the shite on local radio and music video channels that is made with the sole goal in mind of selling "hits" and making it marketing friendly... that music doesn't suck.
To those that enjoy music for something a bit more than background noise and booty shaking, the vast majority of top 40 music is pure shit.

They're not so much "good" as they are "competent". They know how to pick up thier insturments and make passable sounds come out, but they haven't figured out the part where they become good. Until then, they're stuck wearing bulk generic black rock-star clothes stolen from boxes from Scott Stapp's garage and singing about hummers.
I think Nickelback's greatest weakness is its lyrics. Kroegers what 31-33 years old? But he writes songs like he's some horny 18 year old college boy. Its no surprise they sell lots of records, drunk horny teenagers eat that kind of radio rock up. They can rock when they want to, Ill give them that, but lyrically they are terrible and it ruins the music, it has no substence. Just like Creed.
And yes 8 million people can definitely be wrong.
