I was reading this article about the Saskatchewan band The Sheepdogs, who won Rolling Stone's "Choose the cover" contest, and I couldn't help but notice this comment, which is quoted directly from the actual Rolling Stone article:
"Just when I'm hearing the tune from Deliverance in my head, Scaggs meets me there. Yep, outside another bar, a guy is playing that theme on his banjo. It's apparently nothing compared to the awful-sounding locals testing their luck at an open mic night, nor the sound of the
"awful yet extremely popular Canadian band The Tragically Hip emanating from the bar.""
Ouch. Was it "Coconut Cream" that he heard coming out of the jukebox?? Seriously though, it saddens me that the Hip never get any love from the big American music publications. Not that it really matters in the grand scheme of things. We all know how great they are, and I doubt that anybody is gonna care who the Sheepdogs are in a year's time. But as a fan, just once I'd like to see the Hip get a little respect south of the border.

Who really cares? We have the best music right here, and we are lucky that the tasteless Americans never stole it from us in the first place.
I think they are waiting for REM or the Black Crowes to give them some musical pleasure once again. Fourtunate for us we have a band that MADE it in our neck of the woods......or do we just stand by the music we love?

There's no question that some of the best music in the world is made right here in the great white north. I just find it mildly annoying that anytime the Hip get a mention in some glossy world famous rag like Rolling Stone, it always seems to be some kind of snarky, dismissive remark like the one above. Par for the course I guess. It's always been like that for Canadian bands in the U.S., unless of course you're a fashionable indie-rock media darling like the Arcade Fire (who I love by the way).
Let's not forget that the writer, Austin Scaggs, is good friends with the Kings of Leon and blows them in print whenever he can.
So let's put things in perspective then, that Scaggs would go to bat for a bunch of talentless (And ambitionless) wanks, and dis on Das Hips. It's not journalism. He gets paid to party with bands.
Rolling Stone stopped being relevant years ago. That is why I cancelled my subscription last year after more than twenty years as a loyal reader. In fact, the magazines constant hype about the Kings of Leon (one hit wonders at best) was a large part of it as well as their constant embracing of subpar pop bands. Rolling Stone used to be cool. Now its a glossy corporate rag peddling vodka adds to children and music for squares.
Kings of Leon fell off the map (and stage) a couple weeks ago in a bad way! Certainly don't want to turn this thread into a KOL vs Das Hip but the simple fact is we are still enjoying The Hip at their finest AND more great music to come! Kings of Leon will be forgotten by 2013... not that they are a bad band...just the way the music industry is today.
But....It doesn't help to melt down on stage and cancel your tour in the mist of your popularity :thumb:

Granted the RS quote you posted is disrepectful.
But even if no one knows the Sheepdogs in a year - this latest album of theirs has not left my CD player for months now. One of my favorite albums of the year.
I think it is clear that we dont need to have a stamp of approval from US magazines with respect to Canadian music artists. I don't understand why it bothers people that they don't approve of many great Canadian bands? We love them...isn't that what really matters? We nver would have experienced the Hip as we know them now if they relied on a big break in the US. Be grateful it never happened. And I think they live comfortably without that being a signature of their career.

I actually like some of their stuff. But instant fame has a way of destroying bands. For their sake I hope they can survive the big machinery of the American music industry and come out still intact on the other side.

As you can see, Rolling Stone is on about the same level as Teen Beat anymore.
I've had problems with Rolling Stone for a long time. Did you know that they panned The Who's classic album Tommy when it first came out? We fans might call the Hip's sound timeless, but to the snobs at Rolling Stone, it's not nearly trendy enough.
This feeling of nausea, disgust and anger has brought my back from the (internet) dead. I'd like to give this guy a swift kick in the ass.
