Hey all...
I was between classes today reading Coke Machine Glow for the umpteenth time, and I was wondering what the Hipbasers have to say about Gord's literary effot. I personally love the book...some poems more than others...but that is to be expected. My top (three) favorites (beacuse I can't choose just one), would have to be Some Days the World Can Be the Greatest Place on Earth, Gift Advice, and This Empty House. As far as lyrics go, Starpainters, Insomniacs, and Yer Posessed, get me everytime.

I like his poetry just like his lyrics . If I had to pick three favourite poems , I think they would be , Align , E-Mail The PM and Shoe Gazer . My favourite lyrics would be Chancellor ,Yer Possessed and Every Irrelevance . I really hope he continues with this one Hip album followed by one solo album , can't get enough . :thumb:

Old Note is the best poem in that book. hands down.

I don't want to think about how many times that poem has made me cry.

so sad.

it continues to amaze me everytime i read it. it is impressive how he can put so much emotion and so many thoughts into such a short poem
The lyrics to Lofty Pines touch me in a way I can't understand or express. I don't know what it is...I'm always completely hypnotized by them, whether I'm listening to the song or reading the poem.
Other favourite lyrics belong to Chancellor and Yer Possessed.
Favourite poems? I can't keep it down to three! I rarely read CMG because I am trying to keep it in mint condition (not for resale later but because I had to borrow a car to drive 100 miles to find this when it came out and I am worried that when it gets dog-eared I won't be able to replace it. So here are my faves:
Summer On
Goalie
Old Note (you two are so riht about that one)
Michigan Gig
Minneapolis Hotel Room
and...of course...Coke Machine Glow. It's one of my very favourites. I think about it all the time.
I think the thing that most amazes me about the poems in CMG is how often I look to them to find inspiration, or just to see that someone has words for how I'm feeling when I can't seem find them on my own. I particularly feel that way about the title poem, as well as
Gift Advice (with the exception of the gender reversal), and
Kieteldood...which always seems to conjure up images of Hip shows in small clubs like the TLA or the Landmark...

I'm ordering Coke Machine Glow, I'm really curious to read the poems after all your reviews.
First heksenketel now kieteldood... he makes us Dutchies proud
Why, what's a kieteldood? I didn't know it was an actual word, I thought maybe something one of his kids said
Hahaha I can picture it now..."da da.... kieteldood"
Nice try but no....its Dutch. Its pronounced as "keetledote" and it means the following :
Kietelen is to tickle somebody and dood means death.. so literally it means "tickledeath". When somebody is really asking for it, you say I'm gonna give you the kieteldood..which means you'll tickle them till they beg for mercy

Ha ha ha...that's hilarious. I'm going to end up using that expression one of these days  8)
Actually it's a little bit of a letdown...right next to the word Kieteldood Gord put "death by tickling" in brackets. I never realized it was a translation, I thought it was just an associative title. Thanks for 'splainin. 8)

No problem.
Yes try throwing that expression into some casual conversation and watch the bewildered faces of the people around you. They'll think you're either very refined, or a complete idiot
I'm just wondering why Gord chose to use these specific ones. I guess he liked the ring of them or something.I can picture him flipping through a Dutch dictionary during his tours over there ...
I love Snowy Lambeau. The very last one.
Didn't want to make a new thread, luckily I found this one! I have really been getting into "Mystery" lately. I just moved out to college, and I'm 14 hours away from everyone I know. I feel so isolated, and this song has summed up my feelings, especially toward the summer girl I can't forget. I really want to get the poem book, but it's not available in the states, I'm going to ebay it up in a bit.
Somewhere there's a soccer game.
I can hear the wild crowd moan.
It's not that life here is distasteful to me
it's just that I'm all alone.
I wanted what took a lifetime to learn
and to turn around and start again
and after that to turn and sigh
with no more pause than I had then
It's not that it's such a mystery.
I saw it from miles away.
In time I'll only think of you
when I'm buttering my toast
or in some other reflective moment
when I expect the least
or the most.
It's not that it's such a mystery
it was practically on display
We've got "world enough and time"
and "wither youth" comes or goes.
I hope you'll always think of me as "mine"
and not one of those.
It's not that it's such a mystery
this new-found malaise.
It's just that this mystery
has taken your place.
Any speculation on Gord's own experiences leading up to this poem?
