Still doesn't make it right, but there's no denying that Howe was a tremendous player. I don't think Pronger is even that good of a hockey player. Also, back when Howe played I think it was rare if players didn't throw elbows around, hockey was much, much dirtier back then than it is now. But I mean, if we're gonna talk about hall of fames then Ty Cobb has to be mentioned. The guy would sharpen his spikes and then try to stab the legs of guys covering the bases he was sliding into, he was also the greatest hitter in the history of baseball.

Mess tossed the elbows around too

Incredibly dirty player as well. There's no denying that, I guess the point to be deduced from all of this is, if you are a good player or a superstar, then everybody is willing to overlook cheap and gutless play. Messier was one of the most talented players ever, but you're absolutely right, he was definitely a cheapshot artist.

I think Cormier will come away from all of this and still have his career in tact because that's just the way hockey is. Look at what just happened with Zach Kassien of the Spitfires, 20 games and he gets to come back for the playoffs for a dirty cheapshot, and the guy he hit said he is probably going to have to retire from hockey now. 20 games is definitely not enough, but the culture of hockey right now doesn't care about really mandating this garbage out of the game, so it will continue to take place until someone gets killed on the ice (which will happen) and even then I doubt things will truly change.
"On Jan. 13, 1968, in a game between the Oakland Seals and the Minnesota North Stars, Minnesota player Bill Masterton was checked and fell to the ice causing a severe head injury. He was taken to hospital but never regained consciousness. He died two days later on Jan.15/68."

Of course, they didn't wear helmets then either.

Apparently there have been deaths in Euro leagues in the past as well.

Well there ya go.. and nothing's changed since. I'm all for tough hockey, but the cheapshots are getting ridiculous.
Cormier is facing criminal charges: http://tsn.ca/chl/story/?id=321220
