This weekend brings the release of James Cameron's Avatar, the most expensive film ever made. So Hipbase what say you? Hit or Hype?
I saw it in Imax 3D. The story is your basic "great white savior" plot but I thought it really worked. Big time hit in my book. Totaly worth the $15.00 ticket price! :thumb:
There is nothing about this movie to compel me to see it... Much like Cameron's last film.
But it's going to have to be a hit of epic proportions to even break even.
I'm not a big Cameron fan, In fact I think he' a jerk and a plagerist.( Terminator and Avitar are stolen from previouly published scifi books.) However I will say he has reinvented cinima with this movie. I highly recomend it. It's like when movie aduiances first experianced "talkies". Avatar is a game changer.
I'm seeing it tomorrow on Imax 3D. I'm looking forward to it. The reviews have come in, and critics are pretty much unanimous in their praise. This thing is gonna be a massive hit.

Ok. Maybe it's just me but, are 3D movies terrible or what. Like most of the time I really don't notice much of a difference between a 3D films and a "2D" film (except the requisite meteor/sword/fist or whatever flying right in your face). Everybody's talking about this film as if it's the greatest thing to ever happen to movies since... ever. What is it in particular that's giving it all the hype? Sorry it's just in all the previews/interviews/reviews I hear about this I NEVER hear much of a plot line or generally anything about the movie itself besides that its "revolutionary" and "it's gonna change the way that movies are made" but never how or what the hell's so great about it. :nooooo
I normaly hate Hollywood/Vancouver movies. I think it's a bunch of coporate crap. You name it and I'll bash it. This is different. The trailers don't do it justice. When you first start watching Avatar it takes a couple of seconds for your brain to adjust. Then it clicks in and the shit starts to fly. The simple story works because of the massive amount of information in every frame. It's beyond photorealistic. Pandoria is so real it's like really traveling to another planet. More than once I actually gasped for air. It's unbelievable. Man up and see it in Imax 3D. You will not regret it.
might have to take Rachel over to Williamsville , NY to see this over the holidays
Beats the shit out of driving into toronto...
the killer is , we have an imax...but they only play crap for the tourists in town
I'm not a big Cameron fan , but still think this is worth having a look see

I did not see it this weekend because it was not in 3D at the time I saw a movie.
But it had a pretty good opening weekend: $232 million worldwide. Only $268 million more to break even.
Saw it on Sunday at the Imax, and the critics are right. It's amazing. It totally raises the bar in terms of visual effects and 3D technology. I've never seen anything like it. It's a completely immersive experience and it really does feel like you're "in" the movie. The story/plot is your generic good vs. evil story, which of course we've all seen before. But I've never seen it done like that. It was mind-blowing. I was in awe for the full 2 hours and 40 minutes.
The East Coast snow storm killed the open but the x-mass break will make up the numbers. It really is worth a trip to Williamsvile for the Imax screen. Plus you can stop at Ted's for a dog or Andersons for a beef on Wick.
Mmmmmmm Buffalo.........
I will probably NEVER see this movie, I don't care if they shot it in 4-D, it looks fucking stupid...
although, I say the same thing for at least a good 75% of the crap that hollywood keeps churning out, so who knows, maybe it's me.

fixed
I saw it after having about an hour's sleep and it still blew my mind. I love the groovy 3D glasses they give you - I think I'll wear them in class next semester to make lectures more 3-dimentional.... The story is simplistic, but very relevant for our times, whether you believe in global warming and our eventual extinction or not. Sigorney Weaver steals the film in a lot of ways, glad she reunited with Cameron. It would have been cool to see Michael Biehn from Terminator in one of the roles - maybe the corporate dick or even the evil general - I thought the actor as the general was a little over-the-top, but he was okay. Ok, I'll stop short of a full-length review. Go see it if you are interested in the history of movie-making, or even if you just want to be entertained and thought-provoked simultaneously. 10/10!
