I'm probably the geeky ancient biology minority, but I knew about the actual dire wolf before the song.
But whether or not I knew about the wolf or the Grateful Dead song by the same name first, I can't be so sure.
I also like the extra bit of imagery in the Hip's song, of a Newfoundland dog sneaking past a dire wolf's lair. I think a Newfoundland would probably win in that fight.

Speaking of the Dire Wolf, here's one my favourite Gord intros to the song, he even references wikipedia!

YAH! Love a chatty gord. must have had an extra expresso, or a Tiger Woods-brand Gatoraid b4 the show.

The other day I was watching [god this going to be broad] either some newer tvshow or movie where they referenced a 'dire wolf' a bunch.

When I was a kid my parents took us to la Brea tar pits in los Angeles California. The most common bones found in the tar are dire wolves. I remember being scared silly by a diorama of a pack of dire wolves attacking a giant sloth or some other unlucky megafauna. That image has always haunted my memory when I listen to the song.
