Young to be honoured at Grammys

SANTA MONICA, Calif. - Neil Young is finally going to be recognized by the Grammy Awards.

The Toronto-born 63-year-old, who has never won a Grammy, will be honoured as the 2010 MusiCares Person of the Year with a gala dinner and a concert just prior to next year's Grammys.

The award, given by the MusiCares Foundation and the Recording Academy, which organizes the Grammys, recognizes artistic accomplishments as well as philanthropic work.

Young becomes the first Canadian to ever receive the honour, following such past winners as Bono, Quincy Jones, Elton John and Aretha Franklin.

Neil Diamond received the award this year and performed "Sweet Caroline" during the telecast.

The Grammys will be held on Jan. 29, 2010 in Los Angeles.


"It is an honour to celebrate the extraordinary legacy of Neil Young at our 20th annual MusiCares Person of the Year tribute," Recording Academy president Neil Portnow said in a release.

"Neil has set a standard of artistic integrity and iconoclastic creativity for more than four decades, and his achievements have been matched by his unwavering humanitarianism."

"He is a shining example of how music people offer their creative gifts to the world, and how they also give back through their commitments to charitable endeavours."

You know, musically I can't think of anything much better/important than Neil.

^^^ There is a little band cald the Beatles that would be considered better and more important by most in the world I think. Not to take anything away from Neil. Probably have to put the Stones in front as well.

How obvious. I would set the three apart from one another. The Beatles broke up 40 years ago, The Stones have been going all these years, but when was the last time the did anything remotely relevant (a hell of a long time ago). Neil has been consistently putting out great albums reliably (when was the last time the stones released two or three albums withing two years?). To me he's a superior songwriter to the beatles/stones any day of the week

The Beatles are overrated.........there I said it, maybe I mean it maybe I don't....let the debate begin

They may be overrated, but no one has had as big an influence on music as the Beatles. Only other one that would be close is Elvis.

And Neil has put out some slop in his time too.

For sure he has, but what I'm saying is the Beatles were only around for 10 years, and the Stones might as well have been. Neil had definately put out some lesser material, however; he has also consistantly put out excellent material over the years.

Yeah, i'm not knocking Neil, I am a huge Neil fan. But still the Beatles had a bigger influence on music as a whole.

Let's just say there are three things we can all agree on:

1. He is deserving of it

2. He is the first Canadian to ever receive it

3. He should have gotten it long before Bono ever did!!
