Hey people! This topic has probably been posted many times before but I thought I would start it up again. I was just wondering what made people start listening to the hip? Was it Gordie's rants,a favorite album or some experience with the hip? Just thought it would be a cool idea to share stories.
I started listening to the hip when I first heard Fully Completly. One day at my friends house, he was listening to 50 Mission Cap and he told me the story behind the song. Then he let me borrow the cd and I listened to the whole album. I don't think I could stop listening to the cd. Then a hip fan was born.

The Hip aren't very well known on this side of the ocean so I had never heard any of their tunes till I met Beat and Storm.
I met them on a dutch forum and whenever the topic of music arose they wouldn't shut up talking about this great Canadian band...The Tragically Hip :roll: :lol:
They sent me a couple of tunes, I checked them out and have been hooked ever since....
It's clear that I am of course forever indebted to Beat and Storm... :wink:

It all start back in Red Deer, Alberta. My parents got "Road Apples" in the mail from Columbia House and I gave it a listen. The rest is history...
Fully Completely did it for me too. I was 9 at the time it came out, and my Dad didn't want me getting hooked on rap or any other sort of "crappy" music or so he deemed, so he said I could only listen to his old Boston, Who and Doors records. Then one day, much like Wheat king, we heard 50 MC on the radio, he explained the song to me and continued to by the record for "us". Within a few months it was mine, and yeah, as Lance said, the rest is history...
I am so glad someone started a cool conversation for today cause work is not a lot of fun today.
My buddy had a huge Green Car we called the Pickle...one day we were cruising in the pickle and on came the Fully album...Locked in the Trunk of a Car really grabbed me. I bought the album that weekend and became a moderately interested fan.
It wasn't until I saw the Hip live in Kamloops on the Day For Night tour that I became a big fan. They are so amazing live. We jumped the baracade and got down to about 15 feet away from the stage. When they played Nautical I knew I had my favorite song and, as I have mentioned in previous posts, they played a fired up Werewolf, baby in the encore.
And finally, I became a huge fan when, on the IVL tour, I met the boys in Vancouver after the Queen E show. They are such great guys and so warm and welcoming to conversation...it was 2am so there were only about 6 people left waiting for them so I was pretty spoiled. Out west, we don't have the chances to interact with the band like you folks do out East, so I feel lucky to have had the chance to meet them even once.

it all started in high school when we would go out for lunch and someone would always have a hip tape in their car. we would listen to every song on Road Apples, but the day that I was fully converted to a hip fan was the day Fully Completely was released, we all skipped class and headed over to the local HMV and all of us bought it. From that day on I was hooked, a couple of weeks later I bought all the previous albums.

It was a free ticket to one of their concerts that did it for me. I barely knew any of the songs but ended up dancing the night away anyway. I was so impressed by Gord's energy and rants also. From then on I was hooked. Now, I am OBSESSED with their music 8) :lol: Typically they are the only band that I will listen to while working out and while working, and while driving and while....well you get the point :lol:

For me my obession of the band didnt come until the phantom power release.
My good friend and i were working midnights at a grocery store and he used to bring his radio and crank the shit out of PP every night. I obvisiouly had known their hits before but thats when i started truly becoming a HIP FAN. And yes i worked in the frozen food section as well!!
About 2 weeks went by and i owned every album and was on napster searching for boots!!!
I've been a fan twice with a giant gap in the middle...in '92 when I heard Courage on the radio, I rushed out and bought Fully Completely, and I loved most of it. But then in '93 I picked up Road Apples, and for whatever reason I wasn't ready for it and didn't like it. Hey, I was only 10 years old - I didn't know what was good for me! :lol: I forgot about the Hip until 1998, when Future Shop had Phantom Power on the listening post. I had heard Poets and loved it, and when I was listening to the album I found Bobcaygeon, and I was completely sold. I bought the album just to have that song, and I was thrilled months later when they finally released it as a single!
So technically I've been a fan since 1992, but I really only credit myself with being a dedicated fan since Phantom Power and, more specifically, Bobcaygeon was the one song that totally turned me on to the Hip. And I never looked back - I picked up all their albums within a year, and started collecting bootlegs aroudn Christmas of '99.
I have always been a devoted fan of Barenaked Ladies, and one night, while aimlessly listening to some BNL songs on cdnow.com, I scrolled down to the "recommended artist" section. The first band listed was The Tragically Hip. On a whim, I went out to Borders the next day to see if they carried any of their albums. As fate would have it, it was the day the Phantom Power was released. After listening to Bobcaygeon at least a thousand times, I knew I had to go buy the rest of their stuff.
Side note: The Hip also intoduced me to my boyfriend...I met him at a Hip show last summer during the IVL tour, and we got to meet Gord on his solo tour on our anniversary...I tell ya, it just keeps getting better and better.

Great stories Yall :thumb: For me it was back in 89 when UTH hit the streets.I was a young wiley teenager lookin for something or someone to toot my horn :wink: When I first heard Blow,I knew that I liked it.It got a metric ton of radio play and when we drank it was always blaring. So time moves along as it always does then low and behold we get blessed again with a little ditty called Road apples.This time around I fell big time for the lyrics,My god I was impressed to say the least.I had yet to witness the majesty of a live gig. By time FC was out I was kinda in the trows of love and relashionships and what have you :| But of course one of my clannsmen comes walking in to the pool hall with FC and I instantly had his headphones on my skull.Loved it. DFN I'm pretty sure solidified my love for this sound and what The Hip were and are saying. To say the least i was looking forward to see the band live. On the FC tour the band got into abit a trouble with the authorites,as I understand they were having a little THC being delivered to them via courier I think,anywho the cops got wind of this and busted it up,it made the papers and everything. So the next tour time they left Toontown off the slate
But as the Gods work in mysteroius ways,Sam the record man put a contest up for 2 tix to the calgary show,as well as a BEAUTIFUL tour coat. and as lady luck would have it my bro won. WHAT A TIME I TELLS YA. That concert was wicked. So years went on and little cool things involving the hip,magic things. So PP comes along and The good folks at Canoe offer a reporter shot, to make a long story short I bagged that. I felt at home being back stage. And as everyone said whoz ever met them, what nice guys. I was so scared of GordD, so nervous,I didnt meet him till after the show,he's so tall,a giant of a man
hock: After the show Gord S invited me and my bro to the Regina gig,same deal back stage passes and the red carpet treatment,I still lack the words to relate my experiences on those few precious days and nights,I laughed I cried I experienced so many emotions a person can feel. So here we are present day and the love is still a constant. The music helps me up when i'm down and empowers me to varying degree's of thought, very mind expanding music. For a long time there The Hip was all I'd preety much listen to which was good,but of recent I've had a wicked hunger to hear almost every kind of music there is, and I attribute that to the Hip,because they are big music lovers,just took me awhile to to get on that boat. So now I'm finally rambling but rambling is great.it breeds thoughts of all shapes and forms. I still need to tell you guys of my invention but i'll do that later. Happy Trails

I believe it was the summer of '88 when I first heard the boys on Q107, and (as I've mentioned before) mistook them for Doug and the Slugs...
In the fall of '88, I packed up and headed off to my first year at Queen's...at that time, in that town, it was pretty hard not to get hooked...I remember how "cool" it was to be able to watch the video for Smalltown Bringdown and know all the places in it (the lakefront shot is directly south of the Queen's residences, near the "Time" statue) and I lived just down from "Frank's" Fish and Chips for two years after...
January '90 the band played a show to what must have been a couple of hundred people at Jock Harty Arena on Queen's Campus...that show, more than anything else hooked me for good...

I as well feel old, I started listening sometime in 89 because the town I lived in picked up quite a bit of radio from Kingston not really sure of the station and I really got in to UTH. Plus being an obnoxious American and turing 19 in the summer of 89, I spent quite a bit of time at Stages and Shakers lounge in Kingson. Also when I finally saw them in a small club, the live act made me a fan forever
i went to a party at my friend eric's he had road apples cranked to 12 all night , went the next day and bought it, since then hip fan for life.
it has become the soundtrack for my life
