All this talk about beer has really opened my eyes to the fact that I may be missing out on some good beer!
I'm not one to try all sorts of beer, and I have been drinking Canadian and American beers for many many years, but what are your opinions of good beers? Lager vs. Ale - Wheat vs. Rice vs. whatever.
I agree with the argument that sometimes you just want a "slurpable" beer and a hot summer day may not be the best time for a dark/heavy beer. But even if it's slurpable (what a great word BTW), it still has to taste good!
So, what are YOUR favorite beers? For me, I like Yuengling and most Sam Adams beers (Winter Lager has to be one of the best EVER). Canadian beer? I like Carlsburg Gold and Molson Canadian.
Thanks in advance for your input!!! Let me know if beers you list are regional - I am from the Buffalo, NY area...
I could go on and on about beer. Mmm. Beer.
But two quick thoughts:
--Can you still get Saranac Summer up thataway? Used to love that in the summertime.
-- And for cheap and good, I drank a lot of Utica Club back in the college days.
I spent a year working in Poland and my opinion of beer changed drastically; my eyes were opened. Beers like Tyskie, Lech and Zywiec, while difficult to pronounce are in a class all their own. They're easy enough to find here in Vancouver and I'm sure if yer ambitious enough, you can find them wherever you are. It's worth the effort.
A buddy just turned me onto a dirt cheap beer, Cariboo, out of Prince George. 5.5% and just over $7 a 6 pack. Not a bad taste either. That's my "slurpable" pint.
I thought Carlsberg was a Danish brewer? I do like their pilsener - alot.
European pale lagers (particularly in the German style, e.g. German pilseners) are my overall favorite beers in terms of a broader classification -- especially for summer "slurping". Some individuals would be St. Pauli Girl, Carlsberg, Becks, Heineken, Pilsner Urquell, Peroni, etc. I mentioned that I really liked Steam Whistle, which is in this style, brewed in Toronto.
I also love complex, robust lagers, but they must be well-balanced. Sam Adams Boston Lager is probably my overall favorite beer --I think the profile of that beer is precisely balanced, and absolutely perfect in every way. I also love Sammy Black Lager.
In the wintertime, I go heavy on Porters and Stouts. There are too many to name, but it's damn hard to beat a good ol' Guinness draught. I also love Sierra Nevada's Porter, and think that Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald porter is one of the best around. I've also always been a huge fan of Sammy Cream Stout.
Finally, I can really dig a good, hoppy ale. Dogfish's IPAs are stupendous, Brooklyn Brewery makes a couple fantastic ales, I love Goose Island's pale ale, as well as Sierra Nevada's.
Too many to mention, but thse are some notables......
Thanks all!!! I have a good start and will try to find some of these bad boys.
If Steam Whistle is from TO, can I get it down here in Buffalo?

Carlsberg is Danish, but it's brewed under license in Canada.
Me, I prefer darker beers, although I will drink something like Heineken in the summer. But these days I'm avoiding beer in favour of whisky, which is just beer with all the calories distilled out of it.

We were looking into that, doesn't appear you can.
I got the impression that they don't export it -?-
Jack Daniels is my preferred
but when it's beer time...
at home i'll usually buy Sleeman's Cream Ale or maybe Alexander Keith's
if i get over to the States I look for Hefeweizen
I don't mind the wheat beers

Listen to this man people!
Pilsner Urquell (and other pilsners from the Czech Republic like Staropramen and Kozel) are delicious, as are dutch lagers like Heineken and Amstel.
I'm not big on Carlsberg to be honest, Peroni (from Italy) is lovely though, nice and light, a real summer day beer.
I'm partial to Weißbier like Hoegaarden too, especially in the summer when the fruity tastes really work for me.
I think we need a testing session for any of you guys who come over for the European shows!
a session of "on the Brown" then...
been there more than once
you know it makes sense...

Now THERE'S a Winnipegger.
How 'bout that Half Pints though? That shit puts hair on your chest. It's like liquid bread.
I brew my own beer. Ale styles, usually. I like making the red amber ale kind of beers because you have so much freedom with the different kinds of grain you can use, you can really make a great tasting beer that doesn't taste like anything else out there. Curious to see how my current brew comes out, I invented the recipe (for the first time) so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
Otherwise I'm a big fan of Big Rock. Love that Grasshopper. And local microbreweries, wherever I go, I try and drink local.
