We've discussed the
"flub" in The Depression Suite and I think there's still a split on what the sound is... however I think I found another flub. At 2:27 of Morning Moon, is that the sound of beer bottles clanging together?
Chris
It does sound like a bottle .
Geeeeeez I think yer onto something........sounds EXACTLY like that. And I'm very familiar with that sound :-)
Speaking of this song, and maybe it's just me, but I find the fade in at the beginning to be pretty jarring. The volume really jumps up in a short period of time, and I think that could have been handled better.
OH yeah it is! But luckily it's very quiet and you can barely notice it.

Nope I am the same. I always turn it up thinking it's not loud enough then BOOM!!!

hock:

Nice catch.
The clinking of beer-bottles makes for better ambient noise caught on tape than does a ringing phone, a la Zep's "The Ocean"

Not as good as a siren though a la As I Wind Down the Pines. There couldn't be a better accidental noise in any song.

I think I have to agree.
And we have the NOLA PD on the French Quarter to thank for that affectation, and we especially have Daniel Lanois to thank for arguing to leave it in the mix when others apparently wanted to lift it from the track.

I did not know Lanois had anything to do with this album.
I thought Steve Berlin produced it and Steven Drake (TATH) mixed it.

Kingsway (where much of M@W was recorded) was Lanois' studio; he might not have official production credits on the record, but I'm sure he was involved in some capacity.
I know I read somewhere that he suggested they leave the siren in AIWDTP mix.....
funny thread!
Does sound like beer bottles but I hear it in other places. To me sounds like the scratch sound when your hand slides on guitar strings
I don't hear anything at all. Maybe my CD's diferent?
Had to put the Sennheiser's on for this one...
At 2:27 there is definitely a "bottle clink"; I'm not convinced it is bottles, but it sounds on purpose. It's possible it is something in the percussion family.
I also noticed a few seconds earlier that there are a few "whistling" noises, 3 or 4 of them between 2:21 and 2:23. Not like a tea kettle but short little "get your attention" whistles like you do to your dog or something. Someone may say it sounds like fingers sliding on the frets, but I don't think so.
Just my 2 cents...
God, this album is turning in to the bloody twilight zone.
