Alright here goes I'm gonna say it. I don't like the new album very much. Just bought it the other day and it just hasn't hooked me like the old ones when they came out. I'll have to listen to it a few more times to give it a chance. Yet I've noticed this with pretty much every album since Phantom Power, though I grew to like In World Container, IVL had good sections and in time Music at Work became my favorite non-rockin Hip album (album-I'm showing my age) CD/Download.
So before you all trash me let me just add that this is a Hip fan since 1993 who loved the early rockin albums of my youth and think Coke Machine Glow is one of the best albums every made (Didn't like Battle of Nudes). Went and saw two shows on the last tour and they were great, still great live band. So it's just one man's opinion but as a hip fan in the lonely mtns of Colorado just wanted to see what anyone elses thoughts were on this. Probably won't find many to agree with me on this here (THip Fan site) but thought I'd throw it at you all.

Most really like it after many listens, some do not.

I hear ya, that's the way the last few records have been for me, but I don't see this one growing on me and I don't feel like listening to it 20 times just to try to like it. I like Morning Moon and Country Day but you can take the rest, as of now. I just miss the days of getting the new album and 6 pack and sitting and listening to it 2-3 times because I LIKED IT, not because I'M TRYING TO LIKE IT.
Billy, thanks for the welcome, have lurked here for a while. Boy this could be a hard spring no Avs or Sabres in the playoffs and a Hip record I don't like.

Did you happen to catch the Aspen show? I'm still waiting for a first-person report from that
intimate gig. I spent some years skiing at Copper and was thinking how great it would have been to have the Hip stop by the neighborhood.
And you're not alone on the new album; there are plenty who lament the missed potential this album had that's buried under the strings, etc. (even after many, many listens). It's fine, and some songs are great, but can't help thinking the whole thing could have been better. I also think it's more appealing if you're at a troubling time in your life. Many are these days, of course, so I think it's the right album at the right time for those folks.
Didn't see the Aspen show, saw Boulder the next night though, great show as most are out here. They always play small venues that would make most people who have to see them at arenas jealous. Did see them in Aspen at a summer festival in 99' opening for the Black Crowes at the base of Snowmass ski area. Was hoping they'd do a festival gig out here this summer, maybe in August.

I drove all the way from Saskatoon to Aspen for that show and it was fantastic. I'm pretty sure it was in 98 though. We rolled in to the festival site just as Greyboy and the rain were finishing up, smoked a nice fat bowl, and secured our spots right at the front. It was my first time seeing them outside of Canada, where you are in a hockey arena with 14,000+ fans. It was so refreshing to be able to move around and dance and and also great to see people who had obviously never heard them before but quickly get into them.
I'm with you on this album; I'm not digging it too much. There are some good tunes - I like Exact Feeling, Honey Please, Speed River and Frozen, and Furrows grew on me pretty quickly - but there's some not so great stuff. Coffee Girl is one of the worst Hip tunes out there, IMHO, Last Recluse is just ok, same with Country Day. I think I have more of a connection with Struggle because I work on the Indian Residential School claims, rather than because of the song itself.

I agree, Coffee is not very good (maybe it's because i don't like coffee?) by hip standards, but i'm sure it'll grow on me in time...I would've put Skeleton Park in its place instead, and left it as a bonus track, kinda pisses me off a bit that it's a single, easily their worst single to date.
I don't know what the fuck this guy is smoking thinking that Recluse is just "ok" though, i think it's easily the best song on the album, and on the flipside of Coffee Girl, one of the strongest singles they've put out since The Darkest One.
Thanks for the replies. It's interesting that other's might not be loving this album but their favorite/least favorite songs are different than mine. It's just disappointing when your favorite band for 17 years starts putting out records you don't like that much anymore. There are still a few good songs mixed in but it's kinds like watching the old star in the fading days of his career. Here's to hoping Sakic just hangs them up.

Recluse just doesn't do much for me...musically I just don't find it too exciting. It's too mellow to be a rock tune, and not mellow enough to be mellow, for me. It just kind of floats along, I guess; it's not terrible, but not too memorable either.
