I hope this album grows on me like a fine mold.
I sure am in need of a good old 6 month ride on a CD.
I cant seem to find many anymore that last long in my CD player or on my car visor.
I find myself changing stuff much more frequently than I used to.
Here is to hoping this album will be the soundtrack to spring and summer 09.

I too yearn for the Don Smith days (live, like they're in the same room sound), but to suggest that Bob Rock has brainwashed these 20+ year music verterans into producing the kind of albums HE likes, is a little far fetched IMO. I spoke with Rob regarding World Container and he didn't apprear to be in a
trance, when speaking of his praise for Bob's work with the band.
Just remember it is only about 30 secs tops of the tracks how the hell can you really get anything from that.
I get the feeling after listening that Gord and the boys are just coming down and are about to explode in the next verse which of course we don't get yet even listening to what they give us of Love Is a First on these samples it is the mellow part of the song.
I think that the sound of alot of these songs have the potential to change quickly in terms of becoming more up beat - rocker type songs. These clips could be a disguise

I can't wait to see what happens in concert, but I have to agree wholeheartedly with Chris on this one.
And personally based on the clip, I think Queen of the Furrows is gonna rock. This is how I feel.

Man i hope so. I'm not giving up on this album but from those 30 second clips i'm not too impressed. Maybe it will grow on me like every album does. I just miss the bluesy, meat and potatos rock and roll this band use to produce. Robby's blues type guitar solos are what really got me into this band. I know they want to try newer things but like the old saying "If isn't broke, don't fix it".

i don't think the hip can be turned into a "studio band" whatever that means. they can do new and interesting things in the studio, and the live tracks might not sound exactly the same as they do on the album, but the hip are always going to be a kick-your-ass live band.
based on the clips, this sounds like another hip album where i'll like the back half way more than the first half... weird that it often works out that way.
can't wait.
I think its ridiculous to judge songs based on the clips. But that's just me.
As per this "studio band" comment... I find even the "over-produced" tracks from World Container (most notably, the title track) found themselves frequently in the live sets for a reason. Although they did sound different live, they still kicked ass. The Hip still knew how to perform them.
You haven't heard the Hip until you've heard them live.
They will never be strictly a studio band.
I really like what I'm hearing from these clips. It does sound incredibly mellow for a Hip record, which is a bit of a departure for them. Their last two albums brought out the heavier "rock" side of them. Judging from these clips, this one sounds like a quieter, more reflective album. It's almost got kind of a Blue Rodeo/Wilco feel. But then again, it's only 30-second clips we're listening to here, so I can't really tell what the overall feel and tone will be. I agree the 2nd half sounds a little more rocking and upbeat than the first half.

The Hip are not the same band they were back in the early 90s. They've changed, evolved, tried different things, kept things interesting, and remained a relevant musical entity for over 20 years. That's what great bands do. It's what makes the Hip so freakin' cool and unique. The guys have mentioned in numerous interviews that if they weren't trying out new ideas and throwing the fans a curveball here and there, they would've broken up a long time ago. If this band hadn't evolved from their early bar-band days, I probably would've lost interest in them by the mid-90s. They could've gone with the "if it isn't broke, don't fix it" rule and given us 12 albums full of the same gritty blues-rock of their early years. But instead they gave us ecclectic and brilliant gems like Day for Night, Trouble at the Henhouse, Phantom Power, Music@Work, and In Violet Light. Those that wanted a return to the ROCK got their wish with the edgy & rollicking In Between Evolution and the intense modern-rock of World Container. As a fan, I'm glad that these guys are so diverse with their songwriting. They can kick you in the nuts with heavy-as-fuck rockers like "The Drop Off" or "Fire in the Hole" one minute, and then turn around and make you weep with gentle acoustic vignettes like "Bobcaygeon" or "Morning Moon". How can you not love that?
Just my two cents.
This thread is hilarious. The people who have already decided that WATS is a classic album and think the band can do no wrong are telling the people who are apprehensive that "they are only 30 second clips so how can you judge based on such a short sample?" Well, how can people think the songs are great based on a short sample, then?

cratch:
Anyway, the clips did not give me the feeling that this record is gonna be a great record. Yes, maybe hearing the full songs will change my mind, but maybe it won't. All I know is that most of the sample clips sound boring. Gord's lyrical ability has been on a steady decline for years now, which is unfortunate.

Are you The Hip's publicist? :what I'm all for trying out new ideas, but if the ideas are boring, I'm not interested. :?

My thoughts EXACTLY.
And I mean, its fine if someone else doesn't like it -- music taste is so subjective. But it seems like one ought to respect it at the very least. I get a bit rattled when people start questioning the band's talent, or allude to the band becoming too studio and not live enough. I don't know, that's just how i feel.
