Wintersleep would probably be #1 for me, but I've never actually seen them open for The Hip.

Yes Flies on Fire I recently picked up their CD on Ebay for 2 bucks. Complete Stones rip off but great fun none the less.
They played with the HIP at Courtcliffe Park in Flamborough. I was at the concert hall shows but I think we missed the opening act because it cut into our pre drinking festivities. That was a great week something like 4 Hip shows in 5 days, Concert hall for 2, Ontario place and Courtcliff park.
Headstones in Kingston or Sam Roberts in Atl were pretty good. I did like Van Allen Belt who played the SE (Charlotte, Chapel Hill and Raleigh) in 96? The worst by far was the Black Sheep at UB.

but really for me it was The Watchmen. I also really enjoyed Sarah Harmer when I've seen her open for them
Yeah Buck 65 didn't hold up well in a stadium but he was great at Guelph Lake
As for OLP at edgefest, it probably wasn't there best performance and I've seen them on much better nights but ranking on hits and cd sales they're probably among the most succesful bands to play before the Hip

Buck is awesome in small venues, but then I love the guy so I may be a little biased.

Rheostatics & The Mahones at ACC 12/31/00 was probably the most enjoyable opener at a Hip show for me.
Wintersleep/Joel Plaskett are a very close second.
Funny thing is, when SRB opened for the Hip for the 2002 tour, I didnt really care for them when I saw them in Chicago, but the Chemical City album really changed my mind about them.
Absolute worst opener that I saw was Pet Engine at the Modjeska. God those guys were terrible.

As I've been reading through this topic, I've been trying hard to remember who had opened for them at each show I've seen. (I think it's 6 or 7 of the Ottawa shows since 1999.) I only remember that By Divine Right were the opening act at my first show, and I absolutely couldn't stand them.

Yeah the two millenium shows had some of the best openening acts ever for Hip shows, I was fortunate enough to see both.

I'm relatively new to seeing The Hip live.
I would have loved to have seen Sam Roberts open on the first leg of that US tour. But alas, it wasn't to be.
My two favourites have been Wintersleep and The Sadies.
Absolutely loved The Sadies at Fort York (Weakerthans were disappointing) and Wintersleep was great in Indy.
