Survivorman, to me is by far the best show on television. For anyone who hasn't seen it you should definitely check it out. Anyways, the host, Les Stroud, used to be in a band called New Regime and worked for Much Music before he became a survival expert. At the 4.40 mark of this video <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-m6EIg6AYA">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-m6EIg6AYA</a><!-- m --> he mentions how he used to share a rehearsal space with an "up and coming" band called the the Tragically Hip. I thought that was pretty interesting. regardless of that, this is a great interview for anyone who's a fan of Les or the show.
FYI- sadly, Survivorman was cancelled, this was his last season.

hahah yeah, Bear Grylls is an idiot, everything he does is counter-intuitive to anything you would do in a real survival situation, such as eating maggots out of a rotting carcass, or picking bits of digested food out of bear shit. I don't think Survivorman was cancelled, Les just had enough. I imagine doing that over a period of time would become very physically taxing. I don't blame him for deciding to take it easy.
Maybe now, he'll call up his old buddies and join them on stage with a little harmonica a la Dan Akroyd.. probably not though.

haha, Im not sure about this Dan Akroyd thing, but its pretty neat that he mentioned he was talking to the Hip about rehearsing beside each other way back when.

Wow, I love Survivorman, I watch it every time i get the chance on OLN, but I had no idea it was coming to an end. What a a shame. I've really got into this whole "survival" thing. Ive recently become Heavily influenced by Stroud and Chris McCandless (from the book/movie Into the Wild). I really like the idea of being taken out of my element and being completely independent and free from absolutely everything. Loosing all possessions and baggage just seems exhilarating to me. However, my girlfriend hates the idea and doesn't understand why. Ah well, maybe one day. So, in conclusion, its quite awesome that Stroud and the Hip have something in common, love it.

Please...Stroud is an amateur compared to Grylls. Bear would eat Les' shit if it'd keep him alive...
Even the Hip know Bear is cooler, they wrote a song about him.

McCandless is the last guy anyone should emulate. It's one thing to dive into the unknown and reinvent yourself; it's another thing entirely to ignore the advice of people who know the area, to go off without essential equipment, and so on. McCandless was a romantic idiot.
As for Grylls vs. Stroud ... I've only ever seen two clips of Bear Grylls' show, and in both cases, the information he presented was incorrect, and distorted in the interest of a dramatic storyline. Grylls is in good shape and has a strong background, but I wouldn't take seriously a single thing that comes out of his mouth. He's carving out a career as a motivational speaker and general-purpose celebrity on the basis of a show that's more sensational than informative. He is a snake-oil salesman, a huckster and a sham.

Im sure help wasnt far if he really needed it, the episode when he was dogsledding it sure didnt take long for that helicopter to find him and take him out. I still liked his show though, mostly for the survival tips and stuff, however staged or real it was, it was fun to watch sometimes.
It didn't take long for the helicopter to find him because he carried a GPS and a radio or sat phone for safety reasons. He could call his safety crew, and they could call him. Doesn't mean he was sleeping in a hotel when the cameras were off.
Anyone who has evidence Stroud wasn't out there alone can share it through the magic of the Internet. I haven't run across any. Do you think that with all the people who work on a project like that over the years, including all the local guides, you can keep a secret? That's how Bear Grylls was exposed as the cheap fraud that he is.

I was purely speculating, I wasnt privy to any of that info. I dont doubt Les Stroud for a minute, I enjoyed his show. Like you said Im sure he would have been exposed by now had he been a fraud.
