Hey Hip Fans,
Now that Morning Moon has been streaming for a week, I'm curious how people would rank it when comparing it to the opening songs on the previous 11 albums. The Hip have some amazing album opening songs but how would you rank them in terms of your favourites and how does Morning Moon fit it? If it's too dificult to rank all 12 songs, just indicate in the poll where you feel Morning Moon ranks. Here is the list of opening songs:
Small Town Bringdown
Blow at High Dough
Little Bones
Courage
Grace Too
Gift Shop
Poets
Music At Work
Are You Ready
Heaven Is a Better Place Today
Yer Not the Ocean
Morning Moon
Great poll - but until I hear the rest of the album it's hard to judge. I can't really separate the rest of the album from how I feel about any specific opening track. Each one, for me, sets the tone of the album.
That said, my dislike for a couple of the opening tunes from prior releases allows me to vote simply because I like this song better.
As an opener, not just as a good song:
1-Blow at High Dough
2-Little Bones
3-Music At Work
4-Gift Shop
5-Grace, Too
6-Morning Moon
7-Poets
8-Yer Not The Ocean
9-Courage
10-Small Town Bringdown
11-Heaven Is a Better Place Today
12-Are You Ready
1. Grace, too
2. Courage
3. Little Bones
4. Yer Not The Ocean
5. Blow at High Dough
6. Morning Moon
7. Gift Shop
8. Poets
9. Are You Ready
10. My Music at Work
11. Heaven is a Better Place Today
12. Small Town Bringdown

I totally agree Chris. I think it is important to hear the entire album and I don't think a week is necessarily long enough to get a true impression of the song.
That being said, I'm still curious about people's immediate reaction to the song when comparing it to previous Hip classics. I also enjoy seeing how Hip fans rank their favourites. It's interesting to see how much they can differ.
Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I just ranked the songs in the order I like them. Nevermind the fact that they're album openers. You don't have to have heard WATS to do that.
Kinda off-topic, but I wonder who decided to make Are You Ready the opening track off of IVL, and not Use It Up...
Use It Up would have been the perfect opener

That's how I intended it. Just rank them as stand only songs. The way I phrased the question is kinda confusing.

I've always thought that. Where's your song ranking?

Thats wierd, I was listening to IVL last night and thought the same thing. What a great song. Randy Newman is the man!
1-Poets (Special place in my heart for PP)
2-Little Bones (Love the opening guitar riff)
3-Music At Work (Always cheers me up)
4-Grace Too (Classic)
5-Gift Shop (Reminds me of my summers spent in Algonquin Park)
6-Blow At High Dough (The mystery of its lyrics keeps me hooked)
7-Heaven Is A Better Place Today (This song got me into the Hip. I'm from Elmira and this song was everywhere after Danny Snyder died)
8-Yer Not The Ocean (Love the explosive guitar right at the start)
9-Morning Moon (Love the song but will have to see how it fits with the rest of WATS)
10-Are You Ready (Catchy tune but never really got into it)
11-Small Town Bringdown (Where it all began, never really liked the song though)
12-Courage (I just really don't like this song...)
With almost all of these songs I have some sort of connection with (maybe even every Hip song) so this was actually pretty tough to do.
PS. Am I the only one on this board who doesn't like Courage? lol
Here's my ranking:
1. Gift Shop (sadly they've never been able to duplicate the majesty of the album version in a live setting, which is a bit strange considering most Hip songs sound better live. But not this one.)
2. Grace, Too
3. Blow at High Dough
4. Little Bones
5. Poets
6. Yer Not the Ocean
7. Morning Moon
8. My Music at Work
9. Courage
10. Small Town Bringdown
11. Heaven is a Better Place Today
12. Are You Ready

I started a thread a while ago that never really caught on asking people to rearrange song orders. I think it was inspired by the back track list on Fully Completely. Anyways, what order would you have put those songs in?
(No, you can't add The Hip Club trio)
Far too early for fair treatment of Morning Moon. I need a quality version on good speakers to make a valid judgement, not a stream on shitty Dell speakers...but:
1. Gift Shop
2. Grace, Too
3. Blow at High Dough
4. Yer Not the Ocean
5. Little Bones
6. Courage
7. Poets
8. My Music at Work
9. Small Town Bringdown
10. Morning Moon
11. Are You Ready
12. Heaven is a Better Place Today
Grace, Too
Poets
Gift Shop
Little Bones
Blow at High Dough
Courage
Morning Moon*
My Music at Work
Small Town Bringdown
Are You Ready
Yer Not the Ocean
Heaven is a Better Place Today
*see Chris's post....
