Was it a gimmick or publicity stunt? For his own sake, I hope so.

People who know him claim its a gimmick, but he claims its real. His family history would seem to suggest that it's real.
The funny thing about Joaquin's appearance was that it completely overshadowed Paula Abdul's drug enhanced appearance on Leno. I guess seeing Paula perform an interview completed wasted and incoherent is old news now though.
Wow that was painful to watch....and a little entertaining I guess.
I heard a radio DJ mention something about it but had no idea what had happened....guess I know now.
I do hope it was a joke 'cause Joaquin is a tremendous actor - I'd hate to see this be his last interview before he goes and does something stupid.
I'm pretty sure its a gimmick. Dave doesn't usually put up with people like that on his show. He takes his stabs then they're off the set after the commercial break. I think Dave was in on it.
I saw a video of Joaquin's "hip-hop" and it certainly doesn't look legit. I wish I could find the video again, he fell off the stage at the end I remember.
To him it reads, "GOOD BYE!" but to everyone else, "BYE! GOOD"

That is exactly what I thought. He looks just like Matisyahu. But of course, not being Jewish, his acontextual version of it is a little weird.

I read an article in MacLeans magazine that Letterman was in on the gag and played along with it, so maybe they're cooperating with this whole thing.

I think its becoming clear this has to be some kind of hoax, the fact that its all being taped and all these bizarre things just keep "happening", it was probably staged.
That said if this is a build up to some big prank or what have you, I love it, its totally out of left field and that fact that its Joaquin makes it that more strange.
