i was listening to edge 102 today and they said that the boys in the hip were so pissed off with what the leafs did by not signing doug gilmour-which in turn made him retire-that they returned their season tickets. Take that john ferguson!!
Wow, Kingston boys always stick together
If this is true, someone on a rather lengthy waiting list (10,000+) just got a very early Xmas present...
People don't just give up Leaf tickets...makes for a good newsbite, though!

Yeah I'm a huge hockey fan I can see the hips point here. The leafs aren't the same without Gilmore. I'm not a leaf fan but I know how die hard leaf fans love Gilmore. Well just my 2 cents. Go Hip!

Can I just make a comment Gilmour was a leaf for 4 seasons almost ten yrs ago. I love Dougie but umm he wasnt a leaf, he wanted to be a leaf and he was again for 5 minutes, he is a 40 yr old player who is way passed his prime and he would just be taking up roster space from a younger player who is ready to join the team. So no offence Gilmour was great in his prime, but why should he have to kill a great career by playing 4 minutes a game and not contributing. Sad as it was that he retired we all thought he was going to b4 he went to Montreal.

You mean the one that Signed joe Newyndyke, or the one that is trying pretty hard to sign Ken Klees....or the one thats benn on the job for a week and not been given any type of chance to prove himself.
GG people let him prove he could do it. We all think as Cliff Fletcher as he saviour of this team because he almost won. Does anyone remember DRAFT SCMAFT comment. Well that way of thinking set this team back and is a main reason why up untill last yr the leafs coudnt trade for any big name talent. So far I think Ferguson is doing a good job, hes got all the restricted player under contract and signed an unrestricted player. At least now Pat Quinn can do what he is best at and coach. Anyone who says he isnt a godo coach look at his record. Won olympic gold, 3 100-point leafs season, Cup finals in Vancouver.
So can we please give him a chance.
Another thing about Gilmour, I am a die hard leafs fan, and it would have a been sadder to play way below his level, then him retiring, especially now that he blew out a knee.
good work hip, leafs suck!
go nucks go
didnt gilmour retire after playing in buffalo only to resurface in montreal
what did the leafs do to him that would cause the hip to give back their tickets?

gilmour wanted to play one last year, and who can blame after the amazing reception by leaf fans when he got traded back. i think he felt like he owed it to the fans of toronto to play another year. the new gm however didnt want him on the team. and the leafs were the only team that he would play another year for.
in response to jkdiamond, just because he older than in his prime, doesnt mean he cant contribute. look at wendal clack coming back to the leafs twice. he was never the player that he was, but he still did get some clutch goals in the "4 minutes" of ice time he got
oh yeah, and how old is joe nieuwendyk???
right.........

Newendyke is 37, had a 57% give or take in faceoff percentage, which is one of the best in the league. Was a main factor b4 he was hurt for Jersey and is still a great defensive forward, as well as being able to contribute offensively.
Clark, who we all loved seeing back in Toronto his last yr, didnt contribute at all in fact he sat any of the games. Please, its sad to see players play long past they should.
GP G A PTS +/- PIM SOG SPCT PPG PPA SHG

Please that was Clarks last season and he spent it between chicago and toronto, If you call then contribution, I dont know what you would call not contributing.
So which of the 4 goals between the 2 teams was clutch.
This wasn't the '85-'94 Clark. In his second stint he was good, not a great player but not bad. Too bad they gave up so much to get him back. In his 3rd stint it was so he could retire a leaf, exactly what happend with Gilmour he retired a leaf. 41 with a bad knee, not knowing if he was going to recover and tying up significant money, doesnt take a genius to realize there were other players to try and sign before Gilmour.
So, man feel free to flame me again, but the fact of the matter is, as much as i loved him. I'd rather they put their young players in to learn, so that eventually I can see them win a Stanley Cup. As much fun as it is to see some of these old guys skating up and down the ice on their last legs. I'll take some guys that never were with this team before and a chance to win.
whatever,
everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and thats yours.
personally i'd like to see gilmour play another year, but maybe thats just me. anyways i made this post was to inform people that the hip returned their season tickets because they felt bad for gilmour's situation, not to argue whether or not he should be playing.
It would have been great if they could have given Doug an honorary captain's job or something like that where he could go out into the community and represent the Leafs, but its a business. Sometimes the greats like Gilmour or Reggie White of the Packers (and Panthers ye gods) think they have enough left in the tank for one more season. Unfortuneatly, thats just a delusion. Better to go out with dignity than trying to recapture lost glory and looking ugly and beaten doing it. Have to admire the Hip for stating their opinion so forcefully

I also think Pat Quinn knows he cant be general manager anymore but he's rigging the deck in a way where Fergueson has no real chance to control the fate of the team.
Well my opinion is this. Gilmore wouldn't be a great goal producer or a force on defense like he once was. I think he will bring leadership and direction to the leafs. Even if it is for one year. Theres never anything wrong with having a guy on your team that can teach the young guys how to play the game right. Gilmore would be like a coach on the ice. Just another 2 cents

Go Hip!!!
