Match-up #34 - Emperor Penguin Vs. Fiddler's Green
Listen to the two songs in the match-up Back to Back, and consider the lyrics of the song. Feel free to post an unbiased analysis of both songs in this thread, but please refrain from cheerleading or making predictions for your favourites.

That makes one of us :thumb:
poor, Fiddler's, never stood a chance.
I don't understand this sudden love affair for emperor penguin (hey bonner, it says it right in the rules, no cheerleading! How would you have liked it if someone sent you their greatest albums list on April 16th!!).

Don't get me wrong, I think EP is an awesome tune, but Fiddler's is, well, Fiddler's! It goes beyond being a great song. Its message and lyrics are beyond great...they're something special. I don't know, it's hard to explain. I know when a song is remarkable when I hear one, and that's Fiddler's Green.
Is it possible that the band playing Fiddler's last year actually HURT part of it's charm and mystique? I mean, it is an amazing song that I love hearing...but after never hearing it all, I got it about 5 times last year, and now it seems just like the rest of the songs I love so much, and thus not quite as special. Just a thought....
Tough choice. I have a lot of love for both songs.

I think I know what you mean. It's an incredible song, and it really touches a nerve every time a listen to it.

Possibly, I think maybe they should have played it just once.
I agree with those who believe Fiddler's and EP get a bit more hype than perhaps they deserve.

I think Penguin benefits from being the closing song on a great album and Fiddler's gained added mystique from not being played live for so long.

If I had to introduce some friends to the Hip, I can think of at least a dozen songs I'd play for them before EP or Fiddler's, including a few songs that got knocked off in the first round.
