Seriously people (tth_fan, Phantom51, and especially screw_ball), why can't you respect musicians just because they cover bands? We can't always see our favorite bands in person all the time (cost, distance, logistics, etc), so seeing a cover band playing your fav tunes is second best! Plus, Strictly Hip totally rocks! They've been playing Western New York and across the states (Charlotte, NC, etc.) for years and get rave reviews. Jeremy Hoyle and his boys have been getting kudos for years, and their original music! Pretty damn good original music too!
Plus, the guys are super friendly and recognize you even if they don't remember your name, and that's why living in Buffalo with an awesome music scene and friendly people is worth living through six months of snow and cold (I don't have to tell you Canadians that!)!
And I'm not just saying this because they played at my wedding reception (and I still love it even though I'm now divorced). It was the next best thing to having TTH play at my wedding.

I'm not a fan of Cover bands that only cover one band and try to imitate them and usually do so very badly, if these guys do other stuff and original stuff then that's cool. My comment was not really a shot at them, I feel if you have taken the time to learn how to play music (which isn't easy to do) I would by trying to create my own music rather than cash in on copying another band note for note. Covering songs in a bar is one thing, acting and imitating a band is another.
And cover bands are certainly not second best to seeing the original act. Listiening to the original acts CD would have to be second best. At least for me.
Second best? Please. As Phantom51 said, the second best is to just listen to them on CD. I really don't like covers unless they're being played by a band I like. Now, imagine NOTHING BUT COVERS from a band I don't like (i.e., all cover bands). Cover bands are a way for musicians to whore themselves out for money and tribute bands are a sign of lack of creativity.

You know, I've always wondered about this sentiment. It seems that whomeever is in an "artistic" type of career is labelled a "sell out" or "prostitute" if they... *GASP* say they want to make money at it.
So, by that definition, we are ALL prostitutes, because, *GASP* we want to make money... to youknow, survive and stuff?
Or, is the term "Artist" meant to be akin to a "God" and "Artists" need to be holier then us peons who just want to make money?

Those who survive through the means of their own material are not prostitutes. Hell, most of the music I listen to are bands that make a living off of their music. Strangely enough, though, none of them are cover bands. I don't believe in selling out. I do believe in loss of musical integrity, though, and that's what cover/tribute bands are subject to.
