I pull out "This Business of Art" from time-to-time, but most of the rest of their (Tegan & Sara) music doesn't excite me at all.

Good point. I suppose that the Travis track is an OK cover of a crap song.
The worst cover of all time is, in fact, Bob Dylan's cover of the very same song, Dancing in the Dark. It is utterly execrable, and is the worst feature of the "Genuine NET Covers" boot, which is itself fairly awful.
Tegan and Sara's is much better. If they got rid of the horribly affected singing (we get it, you're oh-so-sincere singer-songwriters), then it would be pretty good.
The chord progression is not ABAC, not even close. What you're hearing is a little lick they're playing which is similar to a lick in ABAC, I think.

i don't get why their voices hit the shitcan after that album. They both sound really good on it, but they make me what to curl up and close my ears now
I don't even like these girls, but that's a very good cover. I found myself listening really closely to the lyrics on that tune for the first time in ages, and it just reminded me how great Bruce's songwriting is (not that I really needed reminding). Anyways, this is currently my all-time favorite cover:

All said and done, the cover thing on the WC tour was way cool! I hope they do that again next tour. I know some of them were mediocore at best but some were simply amazing (the weight, train in vain, black day in july..etc). I was at the Detroit sound check and it was very interesting to see how they band worked on the cover tunes... ie, in Detroit they tried out several songs with Detroit theme till they got something that would work (panic in Detroit, Black Day and an Iggy song)
And I agree that the Springsteen cover is simular to ABAC. It is indeed the same chord progression. D-A-G with a C thrown in.

In ABAC you have a verse using only the I and VII, and the IV and V don't show up until the chorus. In Dancing, you have a pretty conventional use of the IV and V throughout.
ABAC and this cover may use the same chords, but they do not share the same chord progression.
