Gordon Downie may be better known as lead singer for the Tragically Hip, but the songwriter and solo artist is making waves with his second solo album, Battle of the Nudes. Downie will be performing at Garfinkel’s on Friday, Aug. 29, along with his band, The Country of Miracles and The Cash Brothers.
“”We’re blown away. We’re the only club date on his tour,” said Garfinkel’s manager Erin Gibson. “It will be up close and personal.”
Downie’s first solo album was Coke Machine Glow in 2001. While on tour for that album, he played songs from ‘Nudes’ to see what fans liked and didn’t like. Nudes took more than a year to compile, and mixes sounds from everything —bouncy singles to mournful tunes and back again.
“I enjoy the process of writing to a fault,” said Downie on his website. “I love doing the work. I love solving the puzzle.”
Downie’s band consists of performers who have bands of their own but came together to create an album of mixed talent and distinct sound.
The CD is full of haunting lyrics and interesting sounds. From Downie laughing his way through a chorus to the sound of a snow shovel hitting pavement, Downie and his band are inventive at getting an idea across to the listener.
Mountain Promotions had the concert come across its tables and gave Garfinkel’s the chance to have Downie play at the club. The promoters didn’t have to ask twice. People from as far away as Texas have called about the concert, and people from out of town are even planning their vacation around the it, Gibson said.
For all those Hip fans, don’t worry. As soon as Downie finished Nudes, he was off writing with the rest of The Tragically Hip.
