THE TRAGICALLY HIP

Canadian rockers The Tragically Hip have been playing together since the early eighties. It took a few years for them to get signed, but since their debut EP in 1987, they've been putting out fresh material every couple of years.

Even better than the many fantastic albums, their live shows are worth driving hours to see.
If you haven't heard of them, this probably isn't the best introduction, for that buy their best of (I know, best of's are for housewives and little girls) or look around the internets for more of their stuff. If you're already a fan, than here's a few things you may not have already heard:

We Are the Next Us- poem

I downloaded the "We Are the Next Us" track and then I found the poem on The Hip Museum.

The poem is pretty obvious but the circumstances preceding it are a mystery to me. Can someone please explain the story of this track.

If memory serves, Gord Downie wrote this poem as part of his speech for the Hip's induction into the Canadian Walk of Fame. The lyrics were meshed together with the help of Mark Vreeken, using a demo called Swamp Music from the Phantom Power sessions.

Listening to "We Are The Next Us" there are a bunch of lyrical snippets that made it into songs on WC.

Wasn't it for the Hall of Fame induction at the Junos?

I always felt that the alternate 'So Hard Done By' sounds like a vamped and darker version of 'She Didn't Know'.

What "B Sides" are you referring to for Phantom Power?

Maybe Vegas Strip and Bumblebee, which weren't so much b-sides as they were unreleased demos.
