Hey all,
Can someone help an ignorant American out with something Canadian(ish)? The "Trailer Park Boys" movie is opening in the U.S. and A next week. Despite my only exposure to them being one Hip video and some random references made on this site, I'm going to check it out. Two questions:
Are they funny? Like good funny or cheesy funny. Example good funny might be "Super Troopers", bad funny might be "Men with Brooms". (Which I had to watch a second time to spot the boys cameo!)
Do the boys make any kind of cameo in the movie? Damn, that'd be swell if they did!
All help/comments/snide remarks are greatly appreciated!

Gord appears at the beginning of the movie, along with Alex Lifeson of Rush.
I found it a pretty funny movie, but there is a lot of local humour, and there is not much character developement in the movie, as I guess they expect people going to the movie to know the characters somewhat. I can see being a bit lost if you don't know the characters.
But then again, there's characters in the movie (Gerry Dee) that aren't in the series.

I guess if I had to compare the humor to something you may be familiar with down in the States, I would compare it to Reno 911.
I would guess it to be about 80% written and 20% improv by the actors.......
All in all I think the show and movie is hilarious, but humor can be a very personal thing. Some people love Monty Python, but some people have a blank stare when they see it and just don't get how people can find them funny........
Yes, Gord and Alex both play cops in it, and all the movies at the theatre are Hip or Rush songs........
Just watch an episode or two - they are all over torrent sites - and you'll know what you're in for. The movie is just an extended TV episode.

I thought Men With Brooms was an okay movie...it had a lot of subtle, Canadian humour.
For the TPB movie, when they show the scenes at the movie theatre keep an eye on the movie titles on the marquee - they're Hip song titles.
I found The trailer Park Boys thur the Hipbase and have been in love with them ever since. Don't worry about the US/Canadian thing. Funny is funny and TBD is funner than anything on American TV.
Reno 911 and It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia are the best American comedy shows on television and they pale by comparison. TPB is all about character development.
The film gives a quick run down of the cast but you would be best served if you get through the first couple seasons.
Trust me on this. Sit down, spark up the bong and enjoy the beauty that is The Trailer Park Boys.
Save yourself some money and don't see the movie.
Instead, download the seasons off the internet and start with season 1.
The movie was a "best of" of the seasons and the seasons are 100 times funnier. If you need help PM me.

"MWB" wasn't appealing to me not because it contained a subtle humor that I couldn't grasp. What bothered me about it was it didn't know what kind of movie it wanted to be. Was it a slap-sticky comedy, a romantic comedy, a serious overcome an obstacle movie, a sports comedy/drama? It just felt diluted to me. Of course, maybe there was some regionalised humor that went over my head.
What Canadian humor I've been exposed to cracks me up. Your Canadian legends of course, KITH. On my last Ontario trip, I was watching some sort of sketch comedy show where this guy played all the characters and it was channel surfing TV through various points in history. (Don Cherry commentating on the gladiator fights was the classic highlight for me!)
I'll take Chris' advice and watch some episodes on the information super highway. But if Gord makes a cameo, that's worth the price of admission. Now I just have to find a theater in Brooklyn that's playing it!

These two statements are mutually exclusive. Men With Brooms is Canadien humour. If you didn't like it, I doubt you'll like the Trailor Park Boys.
