Why do athletes do this? Just answer the damn questions in that bland cliche voice and get it over with, don't make people think you are even more of an idiot than they already do. Wow you beat your wife and you scream obscenities at a reporter, what a great role model. Jesus christ... one of these days I hope a reporter snaps and starts beating up one of these prima donnas (except it probably won't happen because the athlete would likely beat up the reporter, being in better shape and all, but still...)
I'm not defending Myer's conduct (and in truth he really started the ball rolling in this incident by claiming the two home runs he gave up were just "pop-ups" :roll:
cratch: ) but this is Philly we are talking about. The fans and the media are absolutely brutal towards their home teams. He had a meltdown and he apologized for it the next day. In my mind, this incident is not a big deal. I'd be more interested to know what happened with him legally after popping his wife in the face (Class act, dude :roll:

I suppose it's because they're so competitive by nature, and when they are already irritated from having a 'bad day at the office', they are accosted within minutes of their failures by people who usually have no experience at that level of athletic competition.
Not to condone that behavior either (you can express your frustrations with the semblance semi-civilized human being), but it's bound to happen from time to time. I know that I wouldn't relish having to address the details of my shitty day on the way to my car afterward. I do realize that such things don't "go with the territory" of my profession (like it does with pro athletes), I also realize that pride, ego, and competitiveness also "go with the territory" of lockerrooms in pro sports.

Yes Esthete, I know you are right. In fact I knew that myself really, it was just my annoyance at hearing this story that made me ask the question. I do understand it would be difficult to answer questions after having a crappy day at work, and that high levels of pride, ego and competitiveness are part of what makes athletes tick. I just wish that high levels of respect, self-control, and decency towards fellow human beings were also a part of what makes athletes who they are, and unfortunately in many pro sports this is becoming less and less true every day.

There are some of those guys out there, and maybe if the media would celebrate, glorify, and appreciate those individuals a little more, pro athletes across the board might take the hint and show more class.....
