Interesting that the Russians have all the largest planes and helicopters.
The Russians have always had a "bigger is better" kind of thing going. Some of them have been really expensive propaganda stunts, like the 100 kiloton nuclear bomb that they designed to impress and scare the West, only it turned out to be a one-shot deal.

I think you're meaning a 100 megaton bomb. A 100 kiloton bomb would be a tactical nuke. Nobody in their right mind would be scared of that....
This mindset goes back a long way. In WWII the Russians designed huge, slow, lumbering, useless bombers that carried their own fighter escorts under their wings.
Their huge transport planes and helicopters reflect a doctrine that emphasizes brute force and rapid movement.
