I thought you guys wanted a fence? Or is that to keep your own citizens IN?
They were talking about building (actually completing) a fence along the U.S./Mexico border. This was during the illegal immigration amnesty debate in the US Senate.
Oh my god no get out of my country!!!

Haha, just kidding.

Seriously though, that's interesting... there was a lot of talk by some people about this after George Bush's re-election, but I thought it was just idle talk borne of frustration from the results. I guess for a lot of people, the sentiment was genuine.
I love how the article glosses over the fact that twice as many Canadians moved to the US (than Americans moved to Canada) in 2006, despite the fact that we have one-tenth of the population.

23,913 of 30 million is a tad more significant than 10,942 of 300 million.

Are you freakin' kidding me!?
Now, this is why Canadians sometimes think that Americans are ignorant...what about the igloo building contests and our log rolling championships!? They totally forgot to mention that as well!

This book is very popular around here.

Many Americans have completely lost hope. Myself included. I feel like a German watching the rise of the Nazi party. I'll stay and fight but we have already made arrangements to send our 15 year old son to friends in Newfoundland when/if the time comes. He's a bit of an Alex P. Keaton. He gets good grades. Plays football. 6 foot 4 and strong like bull.

Wouldn't it just piss you off if your son becomes a Republican?

Just kidding, yanking your chain about the Alex P. Keaton bit. It's early and I havent had near enough coffee yet
Yeah, he definitely leans towards the conservative side. Conservative in manner and attitude not the invading/screw the poor kind. Fortunately growing up surrounded by lesbians, hippies and punk rockers has softened the sharp edges a bit.

Interesting compartmentalization there, Phil.

Personally, I'm in the 'not to be associated with the fundamentalist wackjob' category.

Eh, you've got nothing to worry about. From all accounts, the Democrats should win the White House the next time around, which means you could have Hilary Clinton as president.

Uh, on second thought...
Good God I hope not.

The democrats are almost as corrupt as the Republicans. I can pin point the exact moment the Progressive movement lost heart. Memorial Day 2007. That was the day we found out that the democrats were pushing the oil deal in Iraq. They voted for the war. They intend to say. They intend to hand 80% of the oil fields over to the multi-national oil company's.

The democrats have no intention to withdraw our troops. The US has built the largest "embassy" in the world in Iraq, it's bigger then Vatican City. Sure they will "draw down" our troops. Most people are unaware that we have more mercenaries in Iraq the soldiers. The plan is to send in more as we "pull out".

Our system of government has been taken over by corporations. They own George and Hillary. I know most people consider this paranoia but it's the truth. Rupert Murdock is one of Hillary's biggest contributors.

The sad fact is the oil wars have begun and they will not end until the oil is gone.

My hope is Gore/Obama in 08 but Al knows he would catch a "magic bullet", so he won't run.

Many Americans fear that the next election may not even take place. I thought that kind of talk was just crazy until Bush signed " Directive 51" this past May. Before you say I'm nuts look it up on google. It's real and it's scary.

Is this for real? Could Bush actually get away with this? If what that guy in that interview said was true, those are some extraordinarily sweeping powers he could have. I just can't see that realistically happening in a democratic country, especially from a president on the back end of his last possible term according to that country's constitution. I usually cry "BS!" over anything that even remotely sounds like a ridiculous conspiracy theory advocated by those on the political fringes of society, but this if real is quite worrisome, to say the least.

I've thought for a long time that one of the issues in American politics was that you didn't have enough of a choice in terms of political parties. Having a choice of only two parties when I'm sure there is a vast spectrum of opinions leads, I think, to voter apathy and cynicism over the whole process. I'm not necessarily saying Canada's political system is better just because we have 3, verging on 4, major national political parties, but I think it helps. It's a long hard process to develop a new national party into a force, but I think that may be what is necessary. New ideas, new faces, a renewing of the whole feel and process can only be a good thing. At the very least, if the established parties could make some intelligent choices on their tickets instead of the "establishment" choices then that could help as well. For example, Barack Obama (and I don't know a whole lot about him to be honest and fair) seems to be someone with some new ideas and represents a breath of fresh air in the system. I may not agree with all that he says, but I think you guys could do a lot worse than to have someone like him as President of the United States of America.
I hear you. The media has been so corrupted that the truth has been relegated to paranoia. I can guarantee you that my post was the first time every other American on here ever heard about Directive 51. I honestly envy Canadians. You are a true Democracy. You guys have every right to wave your flag and sing your anthem.
Maybe... but I can't remember the last time I had a Prime Minister (or MP for that matter) with whom I was actually pleased. Maybe I'm just not a fan of politics in general.
