After being bombarded by stories of Michael Vick and his alleged ties to dog fighting one of the more interesting stories to surface for me has been the uncovering of what has been described as the "American subculture of underground dog fighting matches/clubs"

Personally I have never been to a dog fight, nor do I know of anyone who has told me that they have been to a dog fight.

I'm interested to see if that statement holds true in our Hipbase community based on where we live...PS. Sorry to our International friends...there just would have been too many poll options to include you guys too...no hard feelings I hope!!
even after only 18 votes, its kinda interesting
oops - clicked the wrong spot. Can I retract it?

I'm not sure?? My initial thought is no, but perhaps someone else knows something I don't on this
Dog fighting is pretty foreign in Canada...there's a better chance we see a bear attack than a dog fight over here!

Wikipedia- Pit bulls are not allowed to be imported into or brought through Ontario. Severe fines are in place for bringing new pit bulls into Ontario. Pit bulls owned prior to August 29, 2005 are grandfathered in. All grandfathered pit bulls of over 36 weeks of age are required to be sterilized immediately. Grandfathered pit bulls must be muzzled and leashed on a leash of less than 1.8 metres while in public. Sale of non-grandfathered pit bulls to denizens of Ontario is illega.

As the street gangs migrate north (Crips, Bloods, MS13) they will bring dog fighting with them. Nobody wants to say it but it is an intricate part of ghetto/thug life/hip hop. It's on an energy drink, sneaker commercial, album covers, music videos. "Hey dog", "Whats up my dog'. Does anybody think they are referring to a Labrador Retriever?

that is seriously, THE single most ignorant, absent minded, and just plain ridiculous thing i have ever read on this board...

and as somebody who both loves animals and hip hop very very much...I'm actually almost offended that people would think this...

don't talk about things you don't know about...ok people? FUUUUUUUUUUCK! :nooooo

you might as well say that disembowling people and drinking their blood is an intricate part of heavy metal...

Perhaps you should look into the subject before you react so emotionally. Denying the link between Hip Hop and dog fighting is like denying a link between country music and pick-up trucks. You don't have to take my word for it. Just ask Hip Hop icon Russel Simmons.

What's that Russel? You say that there is a problem in the Hip Hop community with dog fights. Don't tell the dark Canuck, he'll drink your blood.

just because russel is in an ad that is against cruelty to animals, it does not indicate it's a huge problem in the hip hop community...i volunteer at the SPCA..must mean everybody else in radio beats the shit out of cats right?

you're a douchebag..
Thanks for the personal attacks.

John Goodwin, manager of animal fighting issues for the Humane Society, drew a connection between Vick’s case and hip-hop. “The growth in dog fighting has been largely fueled by some elements in the popular culture, specifically some rap videos. For example, there is a rapper named DMX. He has a CD named Grand Champ. There is a big pit-bull on the cover and the booklet that comes with the CD describes a champion as a three time winner of dogfights. There is Jay-Z, who had a music video called “99 Problems.” The unedited version had scenes of him handling a dog in a dog fighting pit.”
