Presumably because she'd had unprotected sex at least 4 times. And she didn't have sex by herself either. I wonder where the sperm donor(s) is/are?

I don't know the details of the case - no one does at this point. But if the mother killed herself and the children, there's a very good chance that she was mentally unstable. People who are mentally unstable are not known for acting rationally.
