The release of World Container has created a new buzz in the States about The Tragically Hip. While they have not yet cracked the corporate radio barrier they have managed to seep their way into the hazy conscientious of another American subculture, the Hippies. Now I realize many long time Hip fans first instinct is to remove their baseball hat and punch Hippies in their nappy dreaded heads. However, I think this stinky tribe of trust fund slackers may provide an excellent opportunity to spread the way of The Hip.

I grew up with a steady flow of New Wave music coming out of Toronto radio and Classic Rock/Heavy Metal on Buffalo radio. I will confess to having made my way to half a dozen Grateful Dead shows in my time. At first my motivation was more about the cute hippy chicks rather then the music. By the time I saw The Dead play two nights in Hamilton in 1989(?) something changed. My musical world expanded to include the virtues of the "Jam band". This exposure to the world of extended improvisation and chord progression lead me to bands like The Allman Brothers, Santana, Cream, Zappa, Hendrix, ect. The main problem for me with Jam bands is most musicians loose their focus and turn the music into musical masturbation. (Yeah yeah. You played in the Jazz Lab Band in High School, get to the point hippy!)

Then I found The Tragically Hip in a small event room at Buffalo State College in 1990. When they broke into Highway Girl with the extended jam and double suicide rant my life changed. They are the best of both worlds. I have never understood why The Hip have gone relatively unnoticed amongst the Jam band community. Until now.

The appearance of The Tragically Hip at The 10,000 Lakes Festival is a brilliant move. Whoever booked that gig deserves a medal. The patchouli scented world of the Jam band community is abuzz with talk of The Tragically Hip. Mostly, who are The Tragically Hip? Why are they playing with Bob Weir and Rat-dog? This brings me to my point.

I have been approached by more then one hippy asking me for a compilation of Tragically Hip songs. As a matter of fact two local Jam band icons who occasionally let me jam with them want to go to the Marymoor show. They have also requested compilations.

So Hipbase, I would like to ask y'all to suggest Hip songs that might appeal to this new group of fans.

Get a whole slew of live fan recordings...

The Hip played Wattsburg, PA several years ago at the Grape Jam Festival. Many 'jam bands' played there too. Although nothing of the likes that will play at 10000 Lakes Festival.

I'm making that festival my 'summer show'. It will be interesting to see how the crowd reacts to the Hip as more of a rock/alt act than some of the other headliners. I mean Trey Anastasio, Bob Weir/Rat Dog, Frank Zappa, Little Feat and Derek Trucks Band have a established themselves over the years with a significant following. And they're not exactly 'rock' acts.

Anyway it really shouldn't matter. I'm sure the Hip will put on a good show. Hopefully the outdoor festival sound will be decent. And maybe the Hip will convert a few more 'Hip Heads'!

And as Chris suggested a live sampling would be a good introduction to the Hip.

... weird how everybody just kinda forgot about that thread.

I will be on vacation in Seattle in July and got tickets to the Marymoor show. Can you tell me...what is the venue like? Will it sell out? How is the view? will I have to get there early? Will everyone stand (Ihope)? Thanks for any info you can give.

In answer to your question.. I would include The Luxury.

Oh wow, I totally forgot about the Trippy thread. I'll work from that. I would still appreciate any specific songs/shows people can recommend.

Gotta go with Last Of The Unplucked Gems off of the FC demos. Sherpa and Locked would be good choices too. Consider things with bassier grooves like Yawning or Snarling.

The song that got me hooked for life was Last American Exit. At the time the video came out I was about 18 years old and just getting into CCR. When I saw the vid for LAE I thought man these guys are very similar to CCR, I mean they wear regular street clothes onstage, and play good ole blues rock.

It is a wonderful song and it is my suggestion to you phil.

2004-07-01 - Toronto, Ontario
2004-11-27 - London, Ontario
2004-11-28 - Ottawa, Ontario

It's hard to choose a favourite, but mine is probably the Toronto show, because they were very heavy on the IBE stuff when it first came out.
The London show has one of the more diverse setlists from the tour...
...and the Ottawa show just kicks ass (thanks to an appearance by Vapour Trails).
