Hockey Canada officials are being summoned by a parliamentary committee to explain their choice of Shane Doan as captain of the national team at the IIHF World Hockey Championship.

The Conservatives, Liberals, and NDP supported a Bloc Quebecois motion that demands officials from Hockey Canada and Sport Canada appear before the House of Commons' Official Languages Committee.

At issue is an alleged derogatory remark by Doan toward a French-Canadian referee during a game in 2005. The Phoenix Coyotes forward has denied making any slurs and was cleared by the NHL.

Good to see my tax dollars are being so well spent :x
Absoutely ridiculous. Slurs happen on the ice practically every game IMO. Players make all kinds of slurs. This is pathetic. Almost as bad as the US government sticking their nose into baseball and the steroid issue. Confusedhock:
i kind of think thats funny.... but more stupid than anything.

edit: i'd really love to smack around stephane dion for a couple hours.
didn't the Bloc make a similar motion when Doan got chosen to be on the Olympic team? This is ridiculous
yup...

although, the only thing I'm questioning...is why we couldn't find somebody better than Shane Doane to captain the team...

damn you Islanders again for making the playoffs this year! lol! where's Smytty when ya need em!?!?!?!
The government has no place in sports.
What I want to know is why all of the parties supported it.

perfect statement considering your avatar
Good stuff...maybe Congress can investigate why Roenick isn't playing in the World Championships for USA right now
I like Dave Hodge's take on it...

Finally, thumbs down goes to Members of Parliament who think Shane Doan is a good reason to score political points.

We all know how it works - if one party thinks it can put another in an uncomfortable position, it will not pass up that opportunity, never mind who else might be affected. It's cheap and it's sleazy and this government is often the worst offender.

But because Shane Doan once allegedly uttered an anti-francophone remark, which he, via a lawsuit and in every other way, vehemently denies, Doan is forever seen as political fodder.

If NDP leader Jack Layton really thinks Doan's captaincy "casts a shadow" over Team Canada's efforts at the world hockey championship, he should say exactly why - never mind ancient hearsay. And because he can't, it is entirely proper for Doan and the rest of us to think that Layton and others who followed his lead cast a shadow over the House of Commons.

And TDC - Smytty could have played since the Isles were knocked out in the first round, but I think I remember reading something about him nursing an injury during the Buffalo series so that's why he didn't go.
There couldn't have been a slur. You know if there was, the ref would have head butted him.
Good to see that our county is soooo perfect that the government has time to spend on stuff like this.....ridiculous!!! Confusedhock:
