C'mon Everybody is a great song by a great artist. At least they did a great job of that song. Most of the covers that The Hip play are train wrecks. Gord has a difficult enough time remembering his own lyrics, let alone lyrics from other songs. The band is usually great at the covers but Gord is lucky to get 1/4 of the lyrics sung.
I have to defend "Come on Everybody". A very simple song from a rock and roll pioneer. I thought the Hip nail that one.
I have a feeling there will be one huge thread re-evaluating all the cover songs of the tour...maybe even a poll. :thumb:

At least I've heard them play Rules a couple times before, thanks to seeing as many shows as I can count on my 'fingers and toes'.
But like FC, DFN, TATH, PP, M@W, IBE and now WC, I hit my customary handful of shows for the IVL tour but never got to hear Mundane or Forest or Problem Bears -- which, If I were to make a list of songs I hoped to hear most at the next show I hit, I'd start with those three right there. I'd lose my shit if I heard them bust out any of 'em. Three of my favorites, and they haven't ever played them.
It's cool to hear a band you love play a cover. And it's super cool to hear a band you love cover something from another artist you love. But without question, I would prefer hearing The Tragically Hip light into Ultra Mundane under a flash of stagelight to either of the above.

Yup, it'd be great to hear the IVL outtakes. I can't for the life of me figure out why they were left off. Well, I guess I know the reason but it just baffles my mind.
I like hearing covers but most of the covers sound ragged and rushed and out of control. For instance, why would Gord pick "ITEOTW" by REM to cover? That's a difficult song for anyone who knows the song well to sing. Gord mumbled incoherently through most of it and managed to blurt out a word or two of the lyrics along the way. I like hearing Gord put energy into his singing. When he's singing covers (aside from a few familiar ones for the band, notably Neil and Bob covers) you can tell he's trying his darndest just to read the lyrics and his voice is barely audible at times. It's much better when Gord knows most of the words to a cover so he can let loose, instead of struggling to squint his eyes and read off a piece of paper.
I guess you could say Gord might have the same problem remembering lyrics to his own rare songs that they hardly, if ever, play but if the band practised these songs before hitting the road, they would have at least a reasonable chance to pull them off.

I love covers...but would rather hear some Hip I dont usually get to hear. :thumb:
not even close...Rarities...Covers are okay I guess, and i'm glad to see the boys trying something new this time around, but instead of Lust for Life and I can't explain (my 2 shows from this leg of the tour) I'd have much rather heard pretty much any hip song...i understand WHY they are doing it, and I totally respect it, but for my $$$ I'd prefer seeing the hip sing a HIP song I've never heard them sing, rather than an Iggy Pop or Who song....

I agree with the rest of you. I'd rather hear originals than covers, but ya gotta admit, their cover of "The Weight" with Kathleen Edwards was absolutely brilliant. As was their take on the Clash's "Train in Vain". Just my 2 cents.
You know, someone somewhere in this thread said something about hearing a artist playing a song by a different favourite artist, and how awesome that is.
Someone else said something about the covers being train wrecks because Gord didn't really know the song.
This pretty much sums up the cover of 1979. God, that was something else. It didn't suit Gord's voice that well. It was awesome to hear because it was The Hip playing 1979 (one of my favourite songs ever), but man, that song was written for Corgan and Corgan alone IMO.
The Weight was a great cover, and really tragicallyphish and I are the only ones here to testify on Queen Bitch's behalf. Covers by any band are hit and miss, simply because there are such a wide varieties of vocal styles and ranges out there.
Covers definitely bring a sense of unexpectedness and uniqueness to their shows, I really enjoy Diamond Dogs from the Toronto show. But rarities just mean so much more to me, I was floored by Fire In The Hole and FIDDLER'S GREEN.
I think I'd enjoy hearing Sharks or Freak Turbulence in comparison with anything they could possibly cover (even though their covers rock).
