That show was awesome :thumb:
From living in the States for around 8 months now, I've learned two things. I'm embarrassed by Canadians' knee-jerk anti-Americanism (as I mentioned briefly in the other thread, now using Skippy's language).

I am even more proud of Canada's universal health care.
My fathers people emigrated from Ireland to St. Catherin's Ontario in British North America. In 1888 several members of my family and their neighbors took up arms to repel the Fenian Invasion from Buffalo. My fathers people were Irish Catholics with no particular love for the crown. They picked up arms to defend their new home because they loved their new country and the freedom they had found. I don't know how well known that event is in Canada history but the story of the battle and my families love of Canada has been passed through the generations. We are no longer Canadian but if she ever needs us again we'll be there.
I'm from St. Catharines and I know quite a bit about the area's history...and I have never heard that story. Very cool, NegPhil.
That story is pretty well-known here in Fort Erie. :thumb:
I must confess I also had relatives who joined in the drunken raid on the Fenian side. There is a great story about the Irish Americans who contracted a designer to build one of the first submarines for the attack. They could not pay for it so they got drunk and stole it. They quickly realized that none of them knew how to operate it and abandoned it. I have been developing the story as a script for years. I wrote a nice little part for The Hip if they are interested.

This a a web site that tells the story of The Battle Of Ridgeway.

Any account of the Fenian raids I've ever read paints the Fenians as much less competent than that website would have it.

Anyway, if anyone wants to guess at the origin of southern Ontario's knee-jerk anti-Americanism, well, repeated incursions by armed Americans during the period the province was settled probably has something to do with it....
