It must be the fact that they've been making quality music since the late 80's and are still around.
All lobbys are shoulder to shoulder during openers.
Below is the text of an e-mail I just sent to Mr Douche:
"You are hopefully suffering from having had your review of the who linked at hipbase.com, news source for those of us who took an actual listen to the tragically hip and survived to recognize a worth you seem unable to gauge. Too bad for you, on both counts. If there is justice, I am not the only Hip fan to send you the message that you and a whole bunch of other people missed out. Buy an album or two, and stop gauging the worth of a band by how many socal jerk-offs paid $400 to ignore the greatest band in Canada's history."

the guy specifially states that he wanted the band to "play an extra half hour of hits". This makes me think he is nothing more than some also-ran fan who only takes a cursary glance at the greatest hits compilations.

I commented already in the 2007 Shows section, but there was something else that I had to laugh at when it comes to his review. The Hip might be suffering a downturn in ticket and album sales in Canada, but don’t you have to at least be popular at one point before you are considered an “also-ran from the 90’s”? Last I checked The Hip have played a total of 2 concerts in Orange County in the past 13 years. Once opening for Page & Plant at Irvine Meadows back in 1995 and then at the HOB in Anaheim in 2002. From north of San Diego to south of San Francisco The Hip have absolutely ZERO air play on the radio.
The point is The Hip were never media darlings in this market back in the 1990’s who are now embarrassing themselves by trying to hang on to past glory. We aren’t talking about Oasis or Faith No More here.
It’s important to keep things in perspective here, consider the make-up of the crowd they were playing to. As The Hip took the stage 3 couples in their 60’s took their seats right in front us. As we stood up and started to cheer one of the wives turned around and said, “Oh they must be friends of yours”. So take that Ben Wener, not everyone was in the crowed lobby during their set. :thumb:
For the record, I was not the one who came up with the term douche to refer to this guy. I was playing along with sean.bonner, who started this strand after apparently reading the review, which shows me that some people do care what one guy has to say about The Hip. Remember, too, that the article is linked on the hipbase homepage, which is where I found it. Am I the only person who read it? Am I the only person who was disappointed that the guy is obviously oblivious to the band's music but still took the time to dis them? Perhaps it was snide, but the real point of my letter was to urge this professional critic get to know a bit about the band's work before judging them so harshly. What's the difference between my telling him how I felt about his opinion and some of you guys telling me what you think of mine? Oh, yeah, in my letter I never called him a douche. Who's the douche again?
